This Morning has been nominated for an award at tonight's National Television Awards

Phillip Schofield appears to have made a clear statement amid ongoing speculation surrounding his once-strong bond with Holly Willoughby.

The former This Morning host has unfollowed Willoughby on Instagram ahead of the National Television Awards on Tuesday.

Willoughby's fellow ITV presenter Alison Hammond has been nominated for the Best Presenter gong while the show itself is up for Best Daytime Show.

Schofield may have decided to unfollow his former co-host but still has her sister Kelly listed on his following list.

Willoughby, on the other hand, still continues to follow Schofield on the social media platform.

Schofield's exit from the ITV daytime staple came after he admitted to lying to bosses and Willoughby about a relationship with a young runner on the show.

An investigation has taken place into ITV's conduct following the ordeal with claims of a "toxic" work environment lodged against the channel.

Willoughby remained in her position as the show's host and now presents This Morning alongside a rotating roster of presenters.

Willoughby addressed Schofield's exit on the ITV show after news of his exit broke as she delivered the now-famous "are you okay? I hope so" monologue.

The 42-year-old made a return to presenting duties earlier this week after taking the summer off for the school holidays.

However, after she made her comeback alongside the NTA-nominated Hammond, it's safe to say a number of viewers weren't impressed.

The opening few minutes of Monday's show celebrated Willoughby's comeback with an elaborate musical number.

But viewers soon took Twitter to brand the entire thing as "cringe" and called for Willoughby to follow in Schofield's footsteps by leaving the show.

"This is it, we’ve reached peak cringe,’ one viewer vented on Twitter while another echoed: "It’s 10am, we don’t need a musical."

Elsewhere, another disgruntled viewer hit out: "If there’s a more cringe-inducing show than #ThisMorning I’d like to know."

"They couldn't have possibly opened the show worse than this. #ThisMorning," another fumed while a fifth slammed: "What on earth is this fresh hell?? #ThisMorning."

Others called for Willoughby's exit and a refresh to the show as a whole, including a sixth viewer who let loose: "ITV so need to axe current #thismorning set, format, especially airhead. New presenters and cut the c**p. Or just kill it and be done."
