The Harry Potter author has condemned the publication

JK Rowling has criticised a feminist library after it allegedly displayed a satirical comic called "Lesbians are Dying Out."

The Harry Potter author accused the Glasgow Women’s Library of exhibiting a home-made "trans-zine".

The author, who has previously been criticised for her gender-critical views, described the comic as homophobic.

However, the author of the magazine said that it targets transphobia, saying that debating the topic "gives way to hatred."

Rowling has been at the centre of criticism with the Women’s Library after it displayed placards used by trans-rights protesters.

Now, she has criticised the comic, which features a cartoon parody of a gender-critical feminist who vocally objects to the idea that trans women who have male genitalia can be lesbians.

Rowling said: "Glasgow Women’s Library has chosen to display a delightful penis-centred work designed to shame and coerce lesbians out of same-sex orientation. If anyone can think of a more appropriate name for the Glasgow Women’s Library, do let me know."

She added: "Given the ever-expanding definition of ‘hate crime’, which in Scotland has included taking a woman to court for tying suffragette ribbons on a tree, I think a library choosing to display profoundly homophobic material in what appears to be a celebratory context is worth comment."

The comic is one of a number of publications put on display by the Women’s Library on Friday in an exhibition that will run to the end of the month.

The library said in its publicity that it had a large collection of trans-zines given by authors and "fanz".

It said the exhibition would "celebrate the ways the trans community have used zines to show solidarity, share information and express their creativity and joy."

Rowling added: "Lesbians are same-sex attracted women. Telling them they’re terrible human beings/bigots/transphobes for not wanting sex with the penised is profoundly homophobic."

The hand-drawn comic, dating back to 2018, made clear on the second page that it did not want lesbians to die out.

In a opening note, Hyatt wrote: "This comic is about transphobia. It contains reproductions of sort of things that transphobic people say and explorations of transphobic logic."

The comic is designed to counter claims, increasingly prominent in the years since it was produced, that gay men and lesbians are being erased by trans activism.
