The model and UN ambassador claimed the motorist repeatedly questioned where she was from after the collision

Sabrina Dhowre Elba, the wife of Sir Idris Elba, has spoken out about what she describes as a racist encounter in a London car park after another motorist reversed into her stationary vehicle.

The 36-year-old Canadian model and UN goodwill ambassador shared the incident on TikTok, explaining that the driver immediately turned hostile when confronted about the collision.

"She very quickly asked me, 'Where are you from?' - keep in mind this woman backed up into my parked car - and I said, 'Canadian' and then she asked again," Ms Elba recounted.

She attributed the woman's behaviour to the current "climate in the UK."

The model suggested that the repeated questioning was a deliberate tactic to shift focus away from the woman's responsibility for the accident.

"She wasn't asking for my biography - she was trying to change the terms of the interaction," she stated.

"Suddenly it wasn't about the fact that she had hit my car. It was about whether or not I belonged enough to like hold her accountable."

The former model emphasised that the driver also attempted to leave the scene despite causing the collision.

"Racism isn't always theatrical," Ms Elba observed.

"Sometimes it works by redirecting conversations because you ask for accountability, and suddenly my presence became the issue."

The charity ambassador connected the incident to broader political discourse in Britain, arguing that years of public debate about who truly belongs in the country has created an environment where such behaviour feels permissible.

"When a country spends years publicly debating who belongs or who is really from here or who is too foreign, too demanding or like too ungrateful or too much of a burden - that language doesn't ever stay abstract," she said.

"It becomes social permission. Permission for people like her."

She argued this rhetoric manifests in everyday situations, making black and brown people feel like "conditional citizens" whose right to occupy space remains "negotiable."

Ms Elba has been married to the Luther actor since 2019 and has resided in London throughout their nine-year relationship.

She was present earlier this month when Sir Idris received his knighthood from the King, an honour bestowed in the New Year Honours for his significant services to young people.

The couple are currently working together on anti-knife-crime initiatives in the capital, including plans to establish a cultural venue in North Kensington, inspired by the multicultural environment in which Sir Idris was raised in Hackney.

The model also co-founded S'ABLE Labs, their inclusive skincare and wellness brand focused on melanin-rich skin.

The alleged racist incident comes after Sir Idris has spent years speaking publicly about racism and diversity in Britain and the entertainment industry.

The actor previously addressed the backlash surrounding calls for him to become the next James Bond, describing the racist reaction from some critics as "disgusting and off-putting".

Mr Elba has also spoken about his experiences with stereotyping in television, revealing that a BBC executive once suggested his Luther character was not "black enough".

More recently, he has argued against removing historic television programmes containing racist themes, insisting audiences should be given context rather than having content erased.

Fans were quick to flood Ms Elba's TikTok comments with messages of support following her account of the incident.

One supporter suggested the motorist's reaction may have been driven by jealousy, writing that Ms Elba "had a nicer car than her".

Another penned: "Well said. So frustrating and entitled!"

Others offered words of sympathy, with one person writing: "So sorry this happened."

A fourth praised the way Ms Elba had addressed the subject, commenting: "So eloquently articulated...you should be proud of how you handled the situation."
