The TV presenter is leaving a gig on Channel 4 behind her

Helen Skelton has shared an emotional post marking the end of her time presenting Channel 4's coverage of Super League rugby.

The 40-year-old has been the face of the terrestrial channel's coverage of the sport for the past two years but has taken to Instagram to thank her colleagues as she parts ways.

"What a two years!!!!" Skelton began in an Instagram post alongside a video compilation of her time on the channel. "THANK YOUUU @channel4 @img__media @superleague @rugbyfootballleague for giving us so much freedom and access."

The Countryfile star continued: "We have loved bringing Superleague live games to terrestrial telly. So much love and respect to @joeygardiner_ for steering the ship and crafting something special..."

Skelton then included a link to a special behind-the-scenes video fans could watch from her final bit of coverage.

"If you’re a sports fan I hope you will enjoy it, and if you’ve been around pro sport you will understand some of the special hugs shared in this reel with people who have become family," she added.

Skelton concluded the post with the words: "Sport .... it’s wonderfully, irrationally all consuming. Thank you @paperlondon @marksandspencer @insidejigsaw via @annabelkermanstylist for keeping me smart enough for the sidelines."

News of Skelton's departure from Channel 4 left a number of her followers "gutted" as they rushed to praise the presenter and the team for their efforts over the past two years.

"Gutted to see the channel 4 coverage has ended," one Instagram user penned in response: "Breath of fresh air compared to sky and light years ahead of the bbc coverage which was painful for England v Tonga. Backward step taking it off channel 4 in my opinion. The infectious enthusiasm of you guys made it a pleasure to watch."

"Loved your coverage of rugby league I hope you continue to do it," a second pleaded which was echoed by a third who weighed in: "Hope you are back for next season."

And a fourth simply commended the Skelton and her colleagues: "Love it, you’ve all done an amazing job." (sic)

Skelton's farewell to Channel 4's sporting coverage comes just over two months on from her decision to leave another high-profile presenting gig on BBC Radio 5 Live.

After taking over the Sunday mid-morning slot from Laura Whitmore in 2022, Skelton decided to call time on her stint on the radio station in order to spend more time with her family.

She shares three children - Ernie, eight, Louis, six, and 22-month-old daughter Elsie - with ex Richie Myler with whom she split from in April 2022.

Announcing her BBC Radio 5 Live exit, an emotional Skelton told listeners back in August: "That's it for me on Sundays for now. Thank you for your company over the last year, I've loved every minute of our time together on this show.

"Thank you to all of the team, thank you to all of you. Maybe we'll meet again soon. It's hard to know what to say without getting emotional."

She went on: "I'm not all right about it but you know, needs must. The juggle is real. An eight-year-old with a sideline needs me."

Skelton isn't disappearing from screens anytime soon, however, as she continues to regularly step in on the BBC's Morning Live as a relief presenter, stars alongside Dan Walker in a Channel 5 travel documentary, and is lending her vocal talents to children's series Fireman Sam in the near future.
