Eamonn Holmes has launched a scathing attack on the cost of commuting from Belfast to London, declaring the capital city is a "rip-off".

Reacting to the latest inflation rate hike on GB News, the Breakfast anchor said the price of travelling from Belfast is "disgraceful".

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal the consumer price index (CPI) rate of inflation for the 12 months to July 2025 has risen to 3.8 per cent, an increase of 0.2 per cent.

As cohost Ellie Costello pointed out that a contributing factor of the increase was airfares, Eamonn hit out at the cost of a flight to London from Belfast.

Eamonn stated: "I have to say, as a commuter between London and Belfast, the fares are absolutely shocking, disgraceful.

"I've got to live with it. You could be paying £250 for a single fare, and I could get to Brazil for £250."

Telling Eamonn the other increases that are impacted by inflation, Ellie explained: "It's £200 to £300 for a short haul now, but also petrol and diesel have gone up this month, and food price inflation as well. Items such as coffee, fresh orange juice, meat and chocolate have seen the biggest rises."

Criticising the ongoing cost of living crisis, Eamonn asked: "How do people live? How do people even order deliveries and all those sorts of things, takeaways? It's just through the roof."

Taking aim at the cost of being in London specifically, Eamonn continued: "Prices certainly in London, I tell you what, don't bother coming to live in London.

"I'm an outsider, I live in London, and I think to myself, compared to Manchester, compared to Leeds, compared to Glasgow, compared to Belfast. London is a complete rip-off in so many ways."

Delivering his verdict on the cost of living, broadcaster Aiden Magee urged workers to "live in the other big cities" instead of London.

Mr Magee told GB News: "There were periods in my life where I was flying back and forth all the time, but my dad used to go to Belfast about 20 years ago, and you could easily get a flight for £50.

"I've always said if you've got a transferable career, it's a job you can do anywhere, go and live in one of the big cities. Go and live in Liverpool or Manchester."

Reacting to today's inflation figures, Ms Reeves said: "We have taken the decisions needed to stabilise the public finances, and we’re a long way from the double-digit inflation we saw under the previous government, but there’s more to do to ease the cost of living.

"That’s why we’ve raised the minimum wage, extended the £3 bus fare cap, expanded free school meals to over half a million more children, and are rolling out free breakfast clubs for every child in the country.

"Through our Plan for Change we’re going further and faster to put more money in people's pockets."
