The former Countdown star and the Tory MP have had public spats before

Carol Vorderman and MP Johnny Mercer have reignited their public war of words on social media.

The latest spat comes after Vorderman lauded Labour MP Fred Thomas for "holding his rival to account" as the pair will be facing each other in the next election.

Thomas, who served in the Marines, sparked the row when he took to X, formerly Twitter, to highlight a rise in homelessness among forces' veterans.

The Labour MP penned on the social media site: "In February, my opponent Mercer vowed to end veterans homelessness this year. Instead, it INCREASED by 14%.

"Veterans like myself, who have served our country, out on the cold streets. I’m furious. That is abject failure. Will he apologise?"

Thomas' statement caught the eye of Vordeman who reposted it with a similarly damning comment on the Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs' performance.

Vorderman penned: "@fredthomasuk former Royal Marine, is Labour candidate against @JohnnyMercerUK in GE. Mercer swore he'd END veterans' homelessness in 2023, 'hold me to account' he said.

"New figures show VETERANS' HOMELESSNESS ROSE 14% in 2023. Appalling. Fred is holding him to account."

Fighting his corner, Mercer entered the row with a sweary retort to both Thomas and Vorderman's remarks.

He wrote: "No he’s not. You are both deliberately misleading people. For clicks. Because that makes your s**t lonely life feel better.

"No-one normal really cares about your view. They think you’re mad.

"I’m changing veterans lives. What I came into politics to do. Keep going," he added followed by a series of puking emojis.

The response garnered a mixed reaction from X users, with some even calling for Rishi Sunak to take action against Mercer's use of language.

Mercer returned to the platform soon after the row with another statement regarding the state of homelessness among veterans.

"Politics can be a pretty frustrating sport. Even if you dedicate every working hour to turning around the lives of those who need your help, you will still get those people who are seeking to make a name for themselves or indeed have become irrelevant, (Carol Vorderman)," he began.

"I made a very clear promise on ending veterans sleeping rough because of a lack of provision, this year. I met that promise. Of course people will try and twist, everything I say and do.

"I know there are huge challenges in housing across the United Kingdom. But there is a big difference between not having your own home, and sleeping out in the cold every night.

"I’m in it for those who need me who are desperate, who have nowhere else to turn. Not those who jump up and down, make a lot of noise, but don’t end up changing a single life because they’re only in it for themselves." (sic)

Mercer had previously appeared on LBC with Nick Ferrari where he made the statement he was "going to end veteran homelessness this year".

However, he's hit back at criticism of his pledge by saying he was only referring to veterans "sleeping rough".
