The TV presenter and Carlos Gu are tackling the Samba this weekend

New research shows Angela Scanlon could be making a shock exit from Strictly Come Dancing come Sunday evening.

The TV presenter, who often steps in on the BBC's The One Show and other programmes, has avoided the dreaded dance-off so far this series but that may all change in Week Seven.

Despite regularly finishing in the upper echelons of the Strictly leaderboard week after week, data suggests the Samba this weekend could be her downfall.

Scanlon and Gu will take on the sultry and fast-paced routine to Jennifer Lopez smash hit Ain't It Funny.

However, according to William Hill Vegas, the Samba is the style of dance most likely to result in a dance-off spot or even elimination from the competition for good.

Therefore, once it was revealed she and Gu would be taking on the Samba, the bookmakers slashed her odds from 6/1 for elimination down to 5/1.

The research conducted by the company also discovered that a staggering 21.6 percent of eliminations that have taken place over the past six series have been to dancers taking on the Samba.

Out of the five stars who've already been eliminated this season - not including Amanda Abbington who withdrew for "personal reasons" - almost half have danced the Samba as well.

Both Les Dennis and Eddie Kadi performed the Samba with Nancy Xu and Karen Hauer respectively but ended up losing the spots in the competition.

Scanlon can take comfort in the fact she's not the favourite to be eliminated despite the "curse" of the Samba, however, as that goes to Adam Thomas.

The Waterloo Road star - who fans also fear will leave due to BBC bosses' "mean" routine choice for him - is priced at 4/6 to be sent home.

Thomas saw off Zara McDermott in the dance-off last weekend but the bookies feel this will be one step too far for the actor, who's closely followed by Annabel Croft at odds of 9/2 to be eliminated.

While the odds may still be in her favour, Scanlon has openly echoed the worrying data that William Hill Vegas has presented about the Samba, sharing her fears about the dance on It Takes Two.

When asked by Fleur East if she was "excited" about taking on the Samba, Scanlon replied: "I am anything but excited, I am absolutely shook!

Could Angela Scanlon be heading for a Strictly exit?

WILLIAM HILL

"Here's the thing, somebody said to me on Saturday night when I found out I was doing the Samba, they were like, 'The Samba is basically you in a dance!' You know, it's high energy...

"We got into the training room and it turns out my energy is kind of unbridled whereas the Samba is built on quite a bit of technique.

"Also, I might just be too Irish for a Samba, it's very sexy.

"You might think as a woman it'd be an easy thing to do (but) Carlos has to be like, 'Okay so this is how you sit like a woman'. It's a work in progress."
