Adolescence is additionally nominated for limited drama, building on its previous successes at the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.

The limited series' acclaim hasn't been without its controversy, however. Mr Thorne was forced to defend the series against claims of "race-swapping" and "anti-whiteness" with its depiction of lead character, Jamie.

And its continued recognition by award bodies led to a similar division among TV fans. Reacting to the nominations, one X user praised: "12 BAFTA nominations for Adolescence and every single one is deserved. One of those rare shows that actually stays with you long after you’ve finished it.

"The single take format wasn’t just a gimmick, it made everything feel uncomfortably real. Remarkable television."

A second agreed: "‘Adolescence’ really running the awards season. 12 BAFTA noms is insane well deserved momentum!"

Meanwhile, a third expressed their excitement: "Cant wait for Adolescence to win in everything."

However, one critic had had enough. "How the f*** is it still 'award season'? ADOLESENCE has been out for over a year! Enough with this s**t," they fumed.

And another was bemused as they typed: "How is adolescence still eligible for awards what the hell." (sic)

Meanwhile, Disney+ series A Thousand Blows trails closely behind with seven nominations across the television and craft awards.

The period drama, created by Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight, depicts Jamaican immigrants navigating the bare-knuckle boxing scene in Victorian-era East London.

Ms Doherty secures a second nomination at this year's awards, earning recognition in the leading actress category for her performance as Mary Carr.

The former Crown star, who portrayed Princess Anne in the Netflix royal drama, becomes one of several performers competing in multiple categories on the night.

Comedian and actor Greg Davies, presenter of Taskmaster, will host the Bafta Television Awards at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall on May 10, 2026.

He takes over from last year's host Alan Cumming, who came under fire for his "painful" attempt at hosting the film awards last month.

Last month's Bafta Film Awards concluded controversially when Tourette's campaigner John Davidson's involuntary racial slurs were broadcast during the BBC transmission.

The BBC leads all broadcasters with 73 nominations in total, whilst Netflix accumulated 28 nods across both ceremonies.
