A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is currently in place for parts of the UK

Heavy snow and ice across the UK have forced some schools to close for safety concerns.

A number of schools have confirmed that they will remain closed on Friday, whilst others are set to either open late or close early due to the poor weather.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is currently in place for parts of the UK.

The Met Office's warning covers the entire coast of Britain, as temperatures are set to fall as low as a teeth-chattering -10C.

Parts of the UK could also see up to 5cm of snow today, with warnings of ice as far south as Truro.

The UK Health Security Agency has also issued amber cold health alerts in five regions - the East Midlands, West Midlands, North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber - until December 5.

Journeys by road and rail could take longer than usual as commuters are being warned of possible delays.

Treacherous conditions are possible as temperatures fall below freezing following icy showers.
