The Met Office identified two regions as being particularly at risk of witnessing the bulk of rainfall

Britons have been left bracing for a weekend washout as an “Atlantic low” looks set to batter the United Kingdom.

Up to a month’s worth of rain is expected to fall over Saturday and Sunday, with the Met Office identifying western areas and the north of England as areas particularly at risk.

Around 60 millimeters of rain could fall in certain areas over the weekend, constituting approximately 75 per cent of a typical month’s rainfall.

Torrid conditions come as much of Europe experiences scorching temperatures amid an ongoing heatwave.

A new record-high temperature of 41.8C was reportedly recorded in the Italian capital Rome on Tuesday.

Mercury across the United Kingdom is expected to hover around the mid-to-high teens for much of the weekend.

However, London could witness temperatures exceeding 20C on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office previously suggested the likelihood of the UK experiencing 40C heat stood at around just one per cent.

Meteorological experts at NetWeather have suggested poor conditions come amid a so-called Atlantic low.

The group said: “UK temperatures remain in the high teens to low 20sC as southern Europe swelters.

“An Atlantic low will bring wet and windy weather this weekend although with humid air wrapped up in it.”

The Met Office’s forecast for tonight also said: “A band of cloud and outbreaks of rain moving eastwards tonight, this will be locally heavy over western hills.

“Remaining dry with clear spells for northern Scotland and southeast England.”

The UK’s national service warned conditions could persist on Saturday, adding: “Mostly dry and bright for northern Scotland.

“Elsewhere a cloudy, wet and blustery day. Rain will be heavy and persistent in places, especially over high ground in the west.”

Looking ahead to Sunday and early next week, the Met Office claimed: “Remaining unsettled Sunday and Monday with further showers or longer spells of rain, that will be heavy at times.

“A drier day Tuesday, though still the odd heavy shower possible.”
