Current weather models suggest a long hot British summer could be on the way

Temperatures could hit 35C across Britain as Spain and Northern Africa heats up, forcing the scorching heat towards the UK, current weather models suggest.

Following a hot start to June, one weather expert says record high Atlantic temperatures could potentially bring staggering 35C heat.

However, Jim Dale - Founder and Senior Meteorological Consultant at British Weather Services - says "nothing is yet guaranteed" but there has been a "big move" on the current weather models.

Sweltering temperatures could potentially heat up once again towards the end of June and into July.

Dale told GB News: "Current models are steering heat more east into Italy in the medium term and it's still a way off, everything could easily revert, nothing is yet guaranteed, except for the short term which is showers and thunderstorms!

"Looking towards the end of the month and into July, given the record high Atlantic temperatures, there is everything to play for regarding the next staging post - which is 35C."

Temperatures have soared since last weekend, hitting 32.2C in Surrey on Saturday - the highest recorded so far this year.

But the extreme heat is set to come to an end this weekend with thunderstorms and heavy rain expected to hit many areas.

Weather experts predict the storms will hit on Sunday after slowly moving in from the Atlantic and will hit the western side of the country hardest.

Temperatures are set to drop to mid-to-high 20s over the coming days before the settled spell comes to an end.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for the majority of England and Wales on Sunday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond said: “Over the weekend we’ll be transitioning to a more unsettled regime for the UK, though temperatures will remain high and it’ll feel very humid for many.

“Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to become more frequent and impactful through the weekend, with the potential for associated hail, lightning and some gusty winds.

"The risk of thundery downpours initially starts in the far west on Friday afternoon, but spreads more widely through the weekend, resulting in the warning the Met Office has issued.

“There’s an ongoing likelihood of further warnings being issued and revised in the coming days, so keep an eye on the forecast for the latest outlook.”
