Britain is bracing for a white Christmas as forecasts suggest up to 24cm of snow could fall over the festive period.
The Met Office said it has a “high degree of confidence” the UK would see snow over Christmas, but added that it may not hit the whole of the country.
It comes as the forecaster issued a danger to life warning for parts of Britain amid strong winds and wintry showers.
Snow is expected to fall from midnight on Christmas Day in northern England, Scotland and the Highlands.

Heavy snowfall is set to hit Scotland at 6pm on December 25 with more due on Boxing Day.
According to WX Charts weather forecast, there is also a high probability of snow in Wales and across the Lake District.
Aside from the snow, some hilly areas in the far north of Scotland could wake up to lows of -10C on Christmas Day.
A spokesperson from the Met Office said: "As we head towards the end of next week and the festive period there is, as always, more uncertainty in the forecast.

"However, there are indications that by the end of next week we could see high pressure moving further south and west away from the UK, allowing northwesterly winds to develop at times.
"This would allow some short periods where colder air affects the UK, with the potential for wintry showers in northern areas."
On the lead up to Christmas, the UK is set to be battered by 80mph winds on Thursday.
The yellow warning has been issued for all day on Thursday from Norfolk all the way up to the northern-most point of Scotland.

While the likeliness of a colder spell with snow and ice increases later in December and into the New Year, overall conditions are expected to remain mostly mild and wet.
The Met Office spokesperson added: "A mobile Atlantic pattern becomes more probable towards New Year's Eve.
"The majority of cloud and rain likely across the west, and drier and brighter conditions more probable in the east."
