Separate snow and ice warnings are in place across the United Kingdom

The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning as up to 15 centimetres of snow covers Britain.

Snow will fall across the United Kingdom today and tomorrow, with parts of the North West of England particularly impacted.

The UK's national weather service warned the amber alert could cause disruption to travel, power supplies and mobile phone coverage.

It said: "Snow showers continue to move in from the Irish Sea across the area, with these heavy at times, with the odd rumble of thunder.

"A further 2-5 cm, locally 10-15 cm of snow is possible before showers begin to ease overnight."

The warning only covers Cumbria but separate yellow warnings are in place across Lancashire, Dumfries & Galloway, the East Midlands, North East of England, North West of England, Wales, West Midlands and Yorkshire & Humber.

A yellow snow and ice warning is also being issued to last until midday tomorrow.

In an update issued at around 7.30am, Glasgow Airport said: "Flight operations are currently suspended due to heavier than forecast snow.

"Our winter teams have been working through the night and we hope to resume operations as soon as possible. Please check with your airline for further flight updates."

The airport revealed flights resumed just a few hours later.

"Our runway is now fully operational again and we are working with our airline partners and their handlers to resume flight schedules," Glasgow Airport said.

"Passengers should continue to contact their airlines for further info.

However, the Met Office is suggesting wintery weather conditions could remain in place.

In its forecast for Sunday, the UK's national weather service claimed: "Freezing fog across Northern Ireland which may be slow to clear.

"Sunny spells across northern parts with coastal wintry showers. Cloudier with outbreaks of rain in the south. Feeling cold."
