Do you live in one of Britain's speeding capitals?

West Yorkshire has been deemed the 'speeding capital of the UK' after a recent study found that Officers in the region slapped drivers with the largest number of tickets last year.

Avon and Somerset, Thames Valley and the West Midlands also ranked highly for dishing out speeding offences. This comes as police report excessive speed was a contributory factor in 19% of deaths.

The worst drivers in the country, which is decided on the number of driving licence points received, are located in Bradford.

The information was collected by hostile vehicle mitigation systems manufacturer Heald, but only 23 police forces out of 44 contacted responded to a freedom of information request.

West Yorkshire Police issued a total of 224,160 speeding tickets, making the area the speeding capital of Great Britain – way ahead of second placed Avon and Somerset with 173,428.

Thames Valley Police also handed out more than 150,000 speeding tickets, putting them in third place.

Speaking to GB News about the data, motor journalist Quentin Willson said: “If you look at these figures carefully, you’ve got West Yorkshire number one… that’s no surprise because they’ve got the largest amount of fixed cameras in the UK.

“You’ve got 402 fixed cameras and only 3,600 of those tickets were issued by cops.

“Then you go down to West Midlands and they’ve only got 78 cameras, and 95,000 tickets.

“The more speed cameras you have, the more tickets you issue. You don’t have to be Carol Vorderman to work that out.”

But the journalist questioned whether the figures show that speed cameras are making roads safer.

Research has revealed that every 16 minutes someone is either killed or seriously injured on Britain’s roads.

The top 10 speeding capitals of the UK are:

1. West Yorkshire – 224,160
