Bournemouth is set to be linked to several holiday destinations across Europe, making it the location of intense competition between different airlines

Jet2 has launched several new routes to link the UK and popular Spanish destinations suggesting 2024 is shaping up to be a good year for Britons looking for a quick getaway in the sun.

It has now been announced that Jet2’s 2025 summer schedule will include yet more trips from Bournemouth as it becomes the airline’s 12th UK base.

The low-cost leisure airline will launch its inaugural flight from the Dorset base to Tenerife in April 2025, with 15 additional links across Europe to follow.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays will operate up to 27 flights weekly across other popular destinations including the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Turkey and Green.

The new routes signal intensifying competition between the carrier and other budget airlines, including Tui and Ryanair, who cover most routes between the UK and Spain.

The links that will present the most competition will be those to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Palma and Tenerife.

The Jet2.com and Jet2holidays programme will also include flights to the following destinations:

Tenerife: Up to three weekly services
Fuerteventura: Weekly services (Wednesdays) - exclusive from Bournemouth Airport
Gran Canaria: Weekly services (Sundays)
Lanzarote: Up to two weekly services (Mondays, Fridays)
Alicante: Up to two weekly services (Tuesdays, Saturdays)
Palma (Majorca): up to four weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays)

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “We know that customers and independent travel agents have been asking for a long time to make this move, so we are absolutely delighted to be announcing today that Bournemouth Airport will become our 12th UK base airport.

“As Which? Travel Brand of the Year, we know that our award-winning flights and holidays will be enormously popular across the region, and we cannot wait to show everyone what are all about.”

Bournemouth Airport welcomed fewer than one million customers last year, putting it at number 18 on the table for UK gateways.

Manchester Airport, which is a primary base for Jet2, handles 30 times this number of passengers.

“This latest expansion is a further demonstration of our confidence and it reflects our long-term strategy to be the UK’s leading and best leisure travel business,” noted Mr Heapy.

“We know that customers want to be properly looked after throughout their holiday experience and we are making a significant investment in the regions including the creation of over 100 new jobs to do exactly that.

“From today, we are counting down to the start of operations from Bournemouth Airport when we can delight customers just as we have with millions of other customers from across the UK for so many years.”

It comes soon after the airline announced passengers will have more European destinations to choose from this summer.

Britons hoping to visit Portugal’s Porto will be offered additional packages departing from Manchester and Birmingham airports.

These are being launched as part of the airline’s Discover More range, giving customers and travel agents the chance to book getaways from July 2024.
