With its relaxed pace of life, Italy is a popular pick for expats looking to live abroad after retirement.

Landscapes differ greatly across the country, however, so one social media user Dramatically Expatic, whittled down her top picks for best places to move to in 2024.

According to the Italian news outlet, El Sole 24 Ore, Udine was named the best place to move to in Italy in 2024.

“If you’re not an Italian junkie like myself you may not be very familiar with this place, because it is severely underrated by tourists,” explained the YouTuber.

Located in the regions of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the city is deemed the best place for anyone who can’t decide whether to live by the ocean or mountains.

“Udine is the capital of the Province of Udine in the Italian Region of Fruili-Venezia Giulia,” according to Expiter, a data tool comparing different life factors across Italian cities and provinces.

“Fruili is known as a region of wines, prosciutto di San Daniele and Montasio cheese.

“Udine is an excellent location to taste these products and to start a visit to this less travelled part of Italy.”

Despite being one of the nation’s smaller and more compact cities, Udine boasts a wealth of beautiful gardens, leafy piazzas and parks.

“It's surrounded by probably the most beautiful mountains that I’ve seen in my life,” declared the YouTuber.

“It’s a middle-sized city [that’s] very walkable, has really beautiful architecture, and it is a really good location if you’re interested in road-tripping across Europe.”

Though it’s very easy to reach by car, the city of Udine is less accessible by train, pointed out the travel enthusiast.

Italy is also highly recommended by the Wealthy Expat, who points out that foreigners can also easily acquire a residency permit.

With their 100,000 Euro per year lump sum tax program, you can “enjoy this beautiful country that is usually an extremely high tax county”, the content creator claimed.

“You have a lot of different climates if you want the North, a little bit more chilly,” he said.

“You’ve got Milan, you have the South, Sicily, Sardinia. You have Lampedusa if you want to hang out with African migrants.

“Italy in my opinion also provides a lot better of a luxury lifestyle than Portugal [...] if you’re used to really high-level service, Italy has that.

“Specifically Rome and Milan, you can find amazing hotels, amazing service, great drivers and overall a better luxurious experience than Portugal.”
