Portugal is a very popular destination for expats and tourists thanks to its sunny skies, gorgeous beaches, and rich culture. However, there are multiple factors to consider before moving there.
An expat turned travel agent explained the mistakes he has seen individuals make when journeying abroad, which has turned their move into a "catastrophe and disaster".
Frederik Pohl said on YouTube (@PearlsOfPortugal): "Portugal is a great destination, and there are a lot of benefits, but it is not everybody's perfect spot.
"There are several reasons why the Portugal dream could fail. One mistake is not doing a scouting trip or choosing the wrong location."
Frederik bought his first property in Portugal in 2010

Frederik explained that living on one of the islands is "great, but it has its challenges".
He stated: "You need to have an idea of what you will do with your time. There is not a lot of entertainment, and after six months, you will have seen it all.
"I see this very often. If people buy it based on a dream, they do not check out the location and see if it is perfect."
As well as failing to prepare for where to move to, another mistake is not considering the finances you will need to live abroad.
The expat explained: "When I first talk with people who are interested in moving to Portugal, I will always ask them about finances.
"Portugal is a fascinating country - it has lots of integrity, but in terms of salaries, the average income is not a lot."
Frederik added the importance of "fitting in with the culture" of the Portuguese, whom he described as very "modest".
He said: "They are not really outgoing but take pride in their food, so do not insult their cuisines."

GETTYWhile "it does not happen very often" for people to not fit into the culture, "you will not be successful if you do not understand how the society and culture work".
Frederik advised: "Start by speaking the language and trying to understand the people. Do not just hang out in the expat communities."
