The area features two UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Lake District National Park and the historic Hadrian’s Wall.

Visitors can also discover the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which has long stretches of beaches, dunes and wetlands.

Although it may seem less picturesque than other parts of the Lake District, it hosts the only deep water port between Liverpool and Glasgow and has blast furnaces that formed a key part in the Cumbrian mining industry.

Following in second is Flintshire in Wales which is home to sites such as the Grade 1 listed Gladstone’s library in Hawarden.

The location showcases the Basingwerk Cistercian Abbey alongside Greenfield Valley Heritage Park, a mix of mills and reservoirs.

Flint town hosts one of the country's most famous castles, which was built in 1277 medieval Europe by Edward I, painted by Turner and described by Shakespeare.

Despite its solid reputation as a place to visit, Blackpool is third on the most popular list.

The Central Pier with its attractions, shops and arcades and Blackpool Tower remains a firm hit with visitors.
