Faced with a record-breaking price drop from its biggest rival, Xbox moved fast to even the playing field

  • Sony cut its redesigned PlayStation 5 to a record-low price this month
  • For the first time, PS5 Slim Model cost £409.99
  • Xbox Series X has already struggled to compete with PlayStation sales
  • At £479.99, it could've seen sales continue to struggle against its rival
  • So it has price-matched Sony, dropping its console to £409.99 too

It’s no secret Xbox is struggling to compete with the latest generation of PlayStation, with some estimates showing the PS5 outselling the Xbox Series X and Series S by a ratio of two to one.

To make things worse for the Xbox team within Microsoft, the PlayStation 5 just dropped to a record low price in the UK. The never-before-seen £70 discount is still available on the Slim Model console — a redesign that shed 30% of the bulk of the original and launched at the end of last year.

Faced with the prospect of watching Sony's PlayStation skyrocket up the sales chart again, Xbox has responded to the latest price crash with a discount of its own.

Right now, you can purchase the Xbox Series X for £409.99.

Yes, that means you’ll benefit from the same 15% off as PlayStation fans. Unlike with the redesigned PlayStation 5, this isn’t the biggest discount we’ve seen for the Series X, which dropped down to £349.99 last year.

However, it is the biggest price cut we’ve seen for the Xbox Series X since the new year.

More importantly, it means anyone looking to upgrade to a new console will be able to choose based on the hardware, exclusive features and games, controller, and future roadmap from Microsoft and Sony ...not just the price.

Both discounts seem to be going down very well with customers, with the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 selling out on Amazon UK at various times in the last few days. The online retailer seems to be replenishing the latest generation of consoles, but you might need to wait a day or two.

Amazon is the only retailer offering these price cuts, with the same discounts available from a wide range of UK high street and online stores, including Argos. Although it's worth noting that Very has only cut the price by £20, while John Lewis hasn't discounted the cost at all.

Xbox is the only console on the market that offers access to the Xbox Game Pass subscription — a Netflix-like subscription that lets you download and stream games from Microsoft-owned studios and a rotating catalogue of games from third-party developers.

XBOX PRESS OFFICE

Following approval from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority last year, Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, paving the way for titles like Call of Duty, Diablo IV, and Crash Bandicoot to come to Game Pass soon. Progress within Game Pass games is synced online, so you can pick up and continue across a range of devices, including Samsung TVs, iPad, Android and iOS phones.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

In the coming months, Xbox players will be able to dive into Indiana Jones And The Great Circle ―an exclusive new first-person adventure developed by the team behind the hit Wolfenstein series. A return of comedy-fantasy series Fable is also in the works for next year, alongside a new RPG from Obsidian, called Avowed. All of these will be available on launch day for Game Pass subscribers.

Meanwhile, PlayStation has launched a slew of popular and award-winning exclusive games on its platform, including Spider-Man 2, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War Ragnorok. All of these are sequels to hit games that made the PlayStation 4 such a runaway success.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will also launch on both Xbox and PlayStation 5 next year.
