If you've held off switching to SMARTY because the mobile network was one of the diminishing number that didn't offer eSIM support — good news, you can finally make the move. Yes, this wallet-friendly mobile network has launched digital SIM capabilities, letting you ditch that physical SIM card for good.
If you're hunting around for one of the best iPhone Air deals — the first smartphone to launch without a SIM card tray anywhere in the world — it means you'll be able to sign up for a SIM-only offer from SMARTY. But even if you haven't got the ultra-thin iPhone in your pocket, there are plenty of reasons to switch to eSIM technology.
First up, there's no risk of losing or damaging a SIM card when swapping to a new device, since everything is transferred digitally — like bringing over your favourite apps or photo album. eSIM is also kinder on the planet, since there's no physical SIM card to make or ship to your home address.

For a limited time, SMARTY has doubled the amount of 5G data included with this blockbuster SIM-only plan — so you'll bag 80GB of 5G data to stream music, videos, and podcasts away from a Wi-Fi connection. SMARTY relies on Three's nationwide network of masts, so your signal should be identical to a pay monthly plan with the latter. And there's no extra cost to use that mobile data in the EU either

You can switch networks and start a new contract much faster, since everything happens digitally.
For those who don't know, SMARTY is a UK-based mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), which means that it doesn't own any masts but piggybacks on infrastructure owned and operated by another brand.
In this case, the Three UK network — so if you enjoy a good connection with Three UK, you'll benefit from the exact same signal strength with SMARTY. Launched in 2017, SMARTY offers flexible, low-cost mobile plans with a focus on simplicity and transparency.
For those who don't know, eSIM stands for "embedded SIM" and refers to a small chip built directly into your phone, tablet, or other gadget. Instead of inserting a physical SIM card, your mobile plan can be downloaded straight onto the eSIM via a mobile app, scanning a QR code, or other simple methods.
Most Android phones can store five to seven eSIMs, with users able to run two phone numbers — a work and home number, for example — at the same time. Likewise, the latest iPhone models can store eight eSIMs and run two at the same time.
You can also use eSIM, which can be loaded onto your handset with a QR code scan, to unlock cheaper 5G data to use when abroad, while keeping your UK mobile number for incoming calls.
For now, you'll need to be an existing SMARTY customer to swap your physical SIM for an eSIM.
Just head to your account section of the website and request the switch now.
But if you're looking to join SMARTY as a new customer, you'll have to wait a bit.
They're not offering eSIM directly to new sign-ups just yet. The workaround? You could still join with a physical SIM and then swap it for an eSIM once you're set up.
Group plan owners are in the same boat; they'll need to wait for direct eSIM ordering to become available. According to SMARTY, this is part of its "soft launch" approach with eSIM rollout across the UK.
Want to check if your phone works with eSIM? Just dial *#06# on your keypad.
If you see an EID number pop up, you're good to go. Once you've confirmed compatibility, you can request the switch through SMARTY. They'll send you an email with everything you need — a QR code to scan, an activation code, and step-by-step instructions.
Both iPhone and Android support eSIM, with the ability to store and juggle multiple numbers and data plans for the UK and travelling abroad. Everything can be managed in the Settings app of your device
| DANIEL ROMERO | UNSPLASHSMARTY is one of a handful of mobile networks that haven't reintroduced EU roaming charges in the wake of the UK's departure from the European Union, which regulated against these fees.
That means you'll be able to use your unlimited calls, text messages, and 12GB of your total data allowance each month in 27 European countries. SMARTY currently boasts one million customers in the UK.
