Samsung looks set to match Google's commitment to seven years of software updates

  • Samsung will hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event from 6pm tonight

  • Last-minute leak suggests Galaxy S24 will arrive with 7 years of software updates
  • If accurate, that means the final security patch will arrive in 2031

Samsung will hold its first Galaxy Unpacked event of the year tonight, with rumours pointing to three all-new smartphones in the Galaxy S range. These will supersede the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra as the flagship devices smartphones from the South Korean brand.

The latest keynote, which will be streamed online to watch from anywhere, kickstarts at 6pm tonight.

Ahead of the event, a new leak has revealed a software change that’s likely to be extremely popular with Samsung fans for years to come.

That’s because all three of the rumoured Galaxy S devices will arrive with seven years of guaranteed security updates, according to a report from Android Headlines. That matches the longevity pledged by Google with its latest Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro handsets, which arrived on store shelves last year.

Samsung set an industry standard amongst Android manufacturers when it guaranteed four years of Android operating system upgrades and security updates back in February 2022. If the latest rumoured change is accurate, Samsung will almost double the lifecycle of its flagship smartphones.

It’s unclear whether Samsung is planning to commit to seven years of Android operating system upgrades, or whether it will pledge to keep handsets updated with the latest security fixes and patches for that duration.

We’ll have to wait for Samsung mobile chief Dr. TM Roh to take to the stage later today to find out.

As smartphone hardware ages, the latest software features can be too taxing for the older components – something that’s sure to impact the latest Galaxy S phones when 2031 rolls around and Samsung is preparing its seventh year of updates for the hardware.

While it's always the flashy new software features that attract the headlines, it's the seven years of guaranteed security patches that will have the biggest impact on Samsung users day-to-day.

With so much of our daily lives now stored on our phones, from banking to our entire collection of family photos – it’s critical to keep data safe from hackers and scammers.

Elsewhere, tipsters suggest we’ll see a Galaxy S24 with a 6.2-inch screen (slightly bigger than the 6.1-inch display found on the Galaxy S23) and a 4,000 mAh battery (again, slightly bigger than the 3,900 mAh cell inside the Galaxy S23). Meanwhile, the Galaxy S24+ will purportedly arrive with a 6.7-inch screen, one inch bigger than its predecessor, like its smaller sibling.

Both handsets will arrive with Android 14 preinstalled and a triple-camera with a 50-megapixel main camera, 30x Space Zoom, and all of the usual Portrait Mode and ultra-wide photo tricks you’d expect from a modern flagship phone, whispers suggest.

GBN will bring you all of the latest from the Galaxy Unpacked event as soon as it’s announced, so check back later on to find out everything you need to know about the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
