Daniil Medvedev suffered a meltdown on court after a controversial moment involving a photographer

The 2021 US Open champion has been hit with a £31,485 ($42,500) penalty following his dramatic exit from this year's tournament on Sunday night.

The substantial sum represents approximately 40 per cent of the £81,490 ($110,000) Daniil Medvedev earned for his first-round appearance at Flushing Meadows.

Tournament referee Jake Garner imposed the punishment after the Russian's extraordinary meltdown during his defeat to France's Benjamin Bonzi.

The penalty comprises £22,225 ($30,000) for unsportsmanlike behaviour and an additional £9,260 ($12,500) for racket abuse.

The 29-year-old former world number one's outburst ranks amongst the most severe financial sanctions handed down by US Open officials.

His loss of composure came after an unprecedented interruption at Louis Armstrong Stadium that ultimately contributed to his early tournament departure.

The bizarre sequence unfolded as Bonzi stood on the verge of victory, serving at 5-4 in the third set with match point.

Following a fault, a photographer inexplicably walked onto the playing surface, creating an unprecedented disruption between the Frenchman's first and second serves.

Chair umpire Greg Allensworth's response to the interruption proved controversial.

Rather than allowing play to continue, he awarded Bonzi another first serve, a decision that ignited Medvedev's fury.

The photographer's credential was subsequently revoked by tournament officials.

The unusual incident transformed what appeared to be a routine conclusion into a chaotic spectacle that would ultimately define the match's outcome and lead to one of the tournament's most memorable first-round controversies.

The Russian's response was immediate and explosive.

He stormed towards Allensworth, shouting at the official whilst simultaneously provoking the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

The confrontation created such turmoil that play was suspended for over six minutes. Officials waited for the agitated spectators to settle before allowing the match to continue.

When play finally resumed, the hostile atmosphere appeared to unsettle Bonzi.

Unable to close out the match in the charged environment, he allowed Medvedev to claw his way back into contention.
