The Briton was sent crashing out of the tournament in the first round

Andy Murray has taken to social media to share an image of himself dressed up as a wizard following his Australian Open exit.

The Briton had gone into the tournament hoping to win a fourth Grand Slam title of his career.

Yet Murray wasn't good enough, with Tomss Martin Etcheverry beating the veteran 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in their first round clash.

After the defeat, Murray cut a downbeat and emotional figure.

He waved goodbye to fans inside the Show Court Arena, with some thinking he was appearing in the competition Down Under for the last time.

Yet Murray now appears to have put the defeat behind him.

The 36-year-old took to Instagram to reveal he was spending time with his family following his elimination.

And Murray opted to dress up as a wizard before giving himself a fitting Harry Potter nickname.

"One of the huge advantages to losing in the first round of the @australianopen is getting to play Harry Potter dress up at 5.30am on a Sunday with my daughters," he joked.

"Dumbledad."

Fans loved Murray's post, with one user reacting by saying: "Lost in tennis. Won in life."

A second said: "You'll forever be my goat (greatest of all time)."

A third weighed in by saying: "I love a man who is OK with losing early so he can spend time doing something arguably more important. At his age it’s not about records anymore. He’s made peace with that and you gotta respect that."

And a fourth hailed Murray by saying: "Silver linings mate. Family time is the best time."

Meanwhile, Murray hinted after his defeat earlier in the week that the end of his tennis career was approaching.

"I'm disappointed. Not much went right," he admitted.

"It was a poor performance and it was very, very flat.

“It was an amazing crowd out there and they were trying to pick me up.

"Usually I would try and get them going and try and get energy to the match, but it was just a flat performance.

“I don’t know why. I played well in Brisbane and I practiced well in the 10 days coming into this.

“It’s definitely a possibility that’s the last time I play here. Probably because of how the match went.

“While you are playing the match you are trying to control your emotions and then you can’t believe it’s over so quickly.

"In comparison to last year, it’s the complete opposite.

“I wish I had involved the crowd more and I’m disappointed with the way I played.

"Disappointed with the way I finished.”

Murray has never won the Australian Open.

He has made the final of the prestigious tournament five times over the years, however, with Novak Djokovic beating him on four occasions - and Roger Federer getting the better of the Briton once.
