Rory McIlroy is returning home after becoming The Masters champion last week

Rory McIlroy has returned to Northern Ireland following his triumphant Masters victory, touching down at Belfast City Airport on Friday morning.

The celebrated golfer arrived in his private jet for what sources describe as a brief private visit with no media interviews planned.

McIlroy's Gulfstream G650, registered under the US flag, landed just after 11:30am, having departed from Farnborough Airport outside London approximately 45 minutes earlier.

This homecoming comes just days after the Co Down native finally claimed the one major title that had eluded him for 11 years, completing his career Grand Slam at Augusta National.

The golf star was spotted disembarking moments after landing, carrying his daughter Poppy in his arms.

He was also seen clutching a large cream bag and a backpack as he made his way across the tarmac.

McIlroy was then escorted to a private area of the airport before being driven away.

The airport is just minutes from his family home in Holywood, where fans have been eagerly awaiting news of his return.

His private jet had previously caused excitement among plane spotters when it crossed the Atlantic earlier this week, landing at Farnborough Airport in Surrey on Wednesday morning after departing from Palm Beach International.

But the 35-year-old will not be making any media visits this weekend and intends to celebrate the Easter weekend with his family.

McIlroy's Masters victory on Sunday saw him defeat Justin Rose in a play-off at Augusta National to win the 89th Masters.

The achievement made him the sixth man in history to win all four of golf's majors.

He is also the first European golfer to complete the career Grand Slam by winning the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and Open Championship.

This historic win ended an 11-year wait for McIlroy to claim the one major title that had previously eluded him.

The victory has cemented his position amongst the best golfers of all time, according to commentators.

Following his victory, McIlroy expressed his desire to celebrate with his parents in Northern Ireland.

"I want to say hello to my mum and dad," he said at the green jacket ceremony. "They're back home in Northern Ireland."

Visibly emotional, he added: "They did make a lot of sacrifices for me, and I can't wait to see them next week. I just can't wait to celebrate this with them."
