English fans are brawling in Spain

Violence erupted between Manchester United and Tottenham fans in San Sebastian last night ahead of Wednesday's Europa League final.

Shocking footage from the Basque city saw supporters hurling objects and punches at each other in a disturbing display of aggression.

As many as 70,000 English supporters have descended upon the Spanish northeast for their teams' landmark European final.

And shocked residents alerted authorities at around 9.20pm after witnessing violent behaviour on San Sebastian's Fermin Calbeton Street.

Witnesses reported the fight broke out when two large groups of supporters began shouting and hurling insults at each other.

The confrontation quickly escalated, with one brawler overturning a terrace table to use as a weapon against rival fans.

The chaos then escalated further when as both Manchester United and Spurs supporters grabbed whatever objects they could find to launch at each other.

Drinks and bins were thrown across the street, creating a chaotic scene that posed serious risks to local businesses and innocent passers-by.

The violence marked a dark turn in what had otherwise been a largely festive atmosphere as legions of fans gathered for the final.

Soon after the carnage, several local police patrols rushed to the scene and quickly restored order.

An ambulance was also sent out - and while several people were treated at the scene, none required hospitalisation after further assessment.

No arrests have been made thus far, but officers have remained in the area to maintain control of the situation.

But elsewhere in Spain, fans have so far managed to keep cool heads.

The streets of Bilbao have been packed - with most fans enjoying themselves in good spirits, with drinks flowing.

And further footage has shown Bilbao bars rammed full of chanting fans ahead of the crunch final.

However, travel has proven challenging for some supporters, with flights to Spain skyrocketing to over £1,000 after the two languishing Premier League sides swiped aside Bodo/Glimt and Lazio to secure their berths in the final.

Some resourceful fans opted for a 32-hour ferry journey, setting sail on Sunday evening for a comparatively cut-price £260.

With just six direct flights daily from Britain to Bilbao, and only 65 hotels in Spain's tenth-largest city, accommodation has been booked out for weeks.

The ticket situation has proven equally challenging, with just 14,000 allocated to each team - despite both clubs boasting millions of supporters across England and the world.

Last night, precious tickets for the showpiece event were reportedly selling on the black market for up to £10,000.

And easyJet was charging as much as £1,823 for a one-day return trip from Gatwick to Bilbao, while the cheapest hotel rooms have surged to £1,200.

Despite the isolated violence, footage has shown the majority of fans enjoying themselves as they prepare for the Europa League final.

Both sets of supporters have been pictured marching through the streets of Bilbao, chanting songs with beers in hand.

Spurs fans were also seen welcoming their team bus as it arrived in the city one day before the clash.
