The defender has lashed out on social media

Real Madrid great Sergio Ramos has responded to a dig from Ryanair after the airline mocked his decision to release a debut single.

The 39-year-old defender, now playing for Monterrey in Mexico, unveiled his first track Cibeles on August 31.

Named after the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid, where Ramos celebrated many of his 22 trophies with Los Blancos, the song was released with a music video featuring highlights from his career.

Ryanair’s Spanish social media account quickly joined the online reaction, joking that the track should be banned from its flights.

Ramos replied directly, writing: “But have you already installed speakers on your planes? I’ll lend you my speaker if needed.”

In the video, Ramos performs in Spanish while clutching rosary beads, with the lyrics appearing to reference his acrimonious exit from Madrid in 2021.

“There are things I never told you, that still hurt me,” he sings.

“I never wanted to leave, you asked me to fly.”

Speaking to Spanish broadcaster El Hormiguero this week, Ramos confirmed the words were aimed at his departure from Madrid and president Florentino Pérez.

He also suggested music will become a long-term focus once his playing career ends.

“It’s a love song. What relationship doesn’t involve pain and suffering?” Ramos said.

“When I went to Paris I wrote 60 per cent of the song, because I felt that way. It hurts. Nobody likes leaving the biggest club in the world.

"Songs are about moments. It’s coming out four years after I started composing it.

"But there’s no relationship without pain and suffering, and that’s reflected there. It’s a love song, everything has a beginning and an end.

"When you leave Madrid, it hurts. You become part of the past.”

Ramos added that he sees himself working in both football and music in the future.

He continued: “I’m an optimist. I always tell people to dream. I see myself with both, winning a Champions League as a coach, but I see myself winning a Grammy in the next few years, before [that].

"I feel like making music at this stage of my life, I want to bring the experiences I’ve had to people.

"In the next five to seven years I see myself more involved in music, because music allows you to compose, and to be at home.

"You can make music, do your job and also dedicate time to your family.”
