Marcus Rashford has responded to controversial comments made by Gary Lineker following his move from Manchester United to Barcelona.

The 27-year-old has departed Old Trafford on loan after being deemed surplus to requirements by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ruben Amorim.

Speaking recently, Lineker sparked controversy by suggesting that players were better off playing away from United.

He particularly angered fans of the Red Devils by branding the club as 'rotten', saying: "He seems to be in the right frame of mind and this is such a great challenge for him.

Marcus Rashford has responded to controversial comments made by Gary Lineker following his move from Manchester United to Barcelona

"Yes, they've got brilliant players and it will be tough to play regularly, but there are so many games that they play now.

"They've got a front three of Raphinha, (Robert) lewandowski, and (Lamine) Yamal but you can't play three players every game, in and out.

"Lewandowski is past his best really now - it's remarkable what he's still achieving at his age.

"I think it's a good signing for Barcelona. Marcus at his best is unbelievable.

"Let's look at what has happened to the players that have left Manchester United recently.

"The players that you thought, 'ah, they're really struggling.' They've done unbelievably well. Unbelievably well everywhere.

"Something at Manchester United right now is a little bit rotten and the players that have got away from that have generally succeeded, so I suspect Marcus, who we saw was terrific at Villa, can do the same thing at Barcelona."

Rashford was asked about Lineker's comments at his Barcelona unveiling on Wednesday.

Instead of criticising his parent club, he acknowledged they were going through a 'period of change'.

Furthermore, Rashford also admitted he was grateful for everything United did for him since he joined their academy at the age of six.

"The situation with Manchester United is that the club is going through a period of change, and this has been ongoing for some time," he said.

"I don’t have anything negative to say about Manchester United."

He then added: "I think it has been an important part not only of my career but of my life as well, so I am grateful for the opportunity to play for them.

"But football is the same as life, not everything goes as simple as you may have thought. This is my next step, my next chapter."

Many players have fared well since leaving United in recent years.

Romelu Lukaku, Matteo Darmian, Alexis Sanchez and Ashley Young all won the Serie A title under Antonio Conte at Inter Milan.
