The decision left fans fuming online

Manchester United were denied a penalty in the opening stages of their game against Burnley, leaving fans fuming after a five minute long VAR check.

Former Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker was judged to have committed a foul on Mason Mount, after the midfielder managed to get around him.

Referee Sam Barrott gave the foul initially, which saw Walker clumsily nudge the back of Mount, but was sent to VAR to review the decision.

After the review, the goal was chalked off but no less than five minutes had been wasted in making the decision.

“After review, Burnley number two does not commit a foul on Man United number seven. My final decision is no penalty and drop ball to the goalkeeper,” the referee announced to the stadium.

The ordeal left fans fuming online, with one writing: "VAR is actually a joke at this point."

Another said: "5 mins for the wrong decision VAR at it again."

A third added: "VAR is ruining football."

While a fourth demanded: "Nah let's get rid of VAR now."

While the decision left a bitter taste in the mouths of players and fans, Burnley's resistance was soon broken through a Josh Cullen own goal.

A whipped set piece delivery from Bruno Fernandes caused chaos in the Burnley box, with Casemiro getting his head on the ball and directing it towards goal.

The effort smacked the crossbar, hitting Cullen and rebounding back over the line.

United boss Ruben Amorim has been under heavy scrutiny following his side's defeat and subsequent elimination against League Two side Grimsby side in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese looked to the floor in dismay upon the decision that would have undoubtedly calmed his nerves.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea overcame Fulham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, with VAR a major talking point once more. The visitors were controversially disallowed a goal in the first half, while Chelsea profited from a dubious penalty decision in the second period as they claimed all three points.
