Jamie Vardy is set to leave Leicester City at the end of the season after 13 remarkable years with the club

Former Leicester City striker Steve Claridge has made a cheeky quip about Jamie Vardy's future following the announcement of his departure from the club.

"If his missus keeps doing what she's doing, he's gonna have to play till he's 50, I should think," Claridge told GB News, in an apparent reference to the footballer's wife Rebekah Vardy.

The comment, which likely refers to Vardy's high profile court case with Colin Rooney in 2022, comes as Jamie Vardy is set to leave Leicester City at the end of the season after 13 remarkable years with the club.

The 38-year-old striker announced his departure in an emotional farewell message on social media.

"I have been here so long that I truly thought it would never end," Vardy said. "This has not only been really difficult for me to write but also a really difficult decision to make."

"Leicester City has been my second home, my extended family, my life for 13 years. The club, the city, the people, means so much to me and my family."

Claridge told GB News: "It is the end of an era, there'll be a lot of Leicester supporters with heavy hearts, I’ve got to say. The memories he’s left are incredible.

"None more so than him playing the part he did in."

Asked if he thinks the star striker could hang up his boots, he explained: "I don’t see him packing in. I think we’d have known that already, so I don’t see him packing in.

"What I do see is that it’s very important for him to get the next decision right. You know, because at his age, as I say, it’s not a given that he’s just going to go somewhere and everything’s going to be great.

"But he’s the type of footballer who really has a passion for the game. Some players give up, and they’re happy to give up. I was one of those who couldn’t give up.

"I think he gives me the impression that he’s a bit like that where, without football, there’d be a huge hole in his life."

Vardy will leave as one of Leicester's greatest-ever players, having scored 198 goals in 435 appearances.

His story represents one of football's most remarkable journeys, rising from non-league to Premier League glory.

He joined Leicester from Fleetwood Town for just £1m in 2012, a transfer that would prove to be one of the greatest bargains in football history.

Vardy didn't play in the top flight until he was 27, making his rise to Premier League champion all the more extraordinary.
