The Ajax star looks unlikely to be involved at the competition this summer

England star Jordan Henderson has reportedly been left out of Gareth Southgate's provisional squad for the European Championships this summer.

The Ajax star has made 81 appearances for his country over the years ever since making his debut back in 2010.

Henderson joined Ajax in January after previously moving to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last summer.

But it appears he won't be playing at Euro 2024 this summer, with The Athletic saying the veteran has been left out of the provisional squad.

Gareth Southgate is set to name an initial squad of 26 players for the tournament, which will take place in Germany.

And though Henderson hasn't made the cut, Curtis Jones is set to be included in the expanded list.

Jones has been a good squad player for Liverpool over the years, having made his debut for the Reds back in 2019.

And he looks set to be given his England debut in upcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland.

Likewise Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, despite their relegation to the Championship after a difficult season under Vincent Kompany.

Regarding Henderson, it'll be interesting to see what happens next.

He could yet make the cut if another member of the squad is forced to withdraw through injury.

However, it seems as though the 33-year-old's international career is virtually over after being snubbed by Southgate.

The midfielder has made nine Eredivisie appearances for Ajax since joining in January.

And despite clocking up three assists, he was unable to help the Dutch giants qualify for next season's Champions League.

Ajax could offload Henderson at the end of the season.

He was recently snapped training at former club Liverpool, having previously skippered the Reds to Premier League and Champions League successes.

Earlier in the season, Southgate defended Henderson after he was booed by England fans at Wembley.

Supporters jeered the ex-Sunderland and Liverpool star for his move to Saudi, with Henderson causing controversy due to his work for the LGBTQ+ community.

Yet Southgate defended Henderson in October and insisted the boo boys were wrong to make their voices heard.

“I really don’t understand it,” Southgate said. "He’s a player who I think has 79 caps now for England.

“His commitment and what he has delivered for England is exceptional.

“His role within the group on and off the pitch is phenomenally important.

“He’s the one that has taken the likes of Jude Bellingham under his wing as soon as he came in the squad, provides a brilliant role model for all of the group in his professionalism and his approach to every part of his work.

“Some people decided to boo. I really don’t understand what that is for.

“We’ve got players in England shirts. Yeah, come on, we play Italy on Tuesday (in a key Euro 2024 qualifier). Let’s get behind this team.

“I know we weren’t at our best tonight but that was due to a lot of changes we made and we gave the players out there a difficult task because to be cohesive with so many changes is tough.

“But I would just say that this is a team that are delivering a lot and they all deserve everybody’s support.”
