The Hammers boss is already under pressure

West Ham fans were left furious on Saturday as they lost their Premier League opener 3-0 to Sunderland, with some fans demanding the immediate sacking of Graham Potter.

Potter took charge of the Hammers back in January after Julen Lopetegui's disastrous stint in the dugout.

He was unable to really turn things around, however, with West Ham only able to finish 14th last term.

Potter was once considered a top managerial talent but, with his time at the London Stadium failing to live up to expectations following a dire time in charge of Chelsea, his stock seems to be falling.

West Ham had gone into their clash with Sunderland hoping to prove they can kick on.

That didn't happen, however, with the Black Cats winning on their return to the top flight courtesy of three second half goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor.

And some Hammers fans have now called for Potter to be axed after just one game this season.

"West Ham will have to sack Graham Potter on time," said one user on X.

A second simply wrote: "Sack Potter now."

Another opined: "Sack him now ffs. I can’t be the only one who can see how rubbish Potter is."

A fourth wrote: "Sack Graham Potter today.

"He has no idea how to fix that same issues West Ham have had for the past couple seasons. Embarrassment to lose this."

And a fifth said: "Lmaooo. West Ham. If the board is serious, they will sack Potter immediately after the game."

For now, West Ham look set to stick with the 50-year-old. However, if the tide doesn't turn fast, he could feasibly be out of a job in the coming weeks.

While it was a disastrous defeat to the Hammers, it was an afternoon to remember for Sunderland.

The Black Cats, after eight years of struggling, are now back in the big time. This victory, without a doubt, will breathe energy into the club.

Prior to the clash, meanwhile, Potter had insisted he was pleased with the club's signings this summer.

He said: "We’re happy with the transfer business we’ve done so far, and in terms of the group I think we’re in a really good place.

"We’ve got a nice mix of youth and experience, and we have a lot of good characters.

"Malik (El Hadji Malick Diouf) and Mads [Hermansen] are young players with bright futures ahead. Kyle [Walker-Peters] brings real experience and quality, and Callum [Wilson] brings invaluable know-how. All four have great personalities, and have integrated really well into the group.

"We’ve lost some players, and it isn’t necessarily a case of directly replacing anyone, because everyone’s unique.

"The trick is to be able to carry on improving. It’s not a case of just signing anybody - we need to make sure we bring in the right people, to help the team improve.

"We have to think about what’s right for us as a team going forward, and how best we get the most out of the players we have here.

"It’s about how the team functions in all areas of the pitch, and about how people can develop and grow into different roles."
