Gary Lineker has once again shown his willingness to laugh at himself, with the 64-year-old joking about his private life during a light-hearted exchange with Alan Shearer on The Rest is Football podcast.

The former England striker, who stepped down as host of Match of the Day earlier this year after 25 years at the helm, has long been comfortable poking fun at his personal circumstances.

On this occasion, the subject turned to his love life – or, as Lineker suggested, his lack of one.

Speaking about his weekend journey to Fulham’s Craven Cottage, where he watched the London side draw 1-1 with Manchester United, Lineker revealed he had opted for a Lime Bike to get around the city.

“It was the first time I've ever been on a lime bike. In fact, I think it's decades and decades since I sat on any kind of a bike,” he said.

That prompted Shearer to fire back with a cheeky quip, referencing Lineker’s split from his second wife, actress Danielle Bux, back in 2016.

“It’s probably the first time you’ve had a ride in 15 years!” Shearer teased.

Lineker couldn’t help but laugh, before conceding: “Sadly, that’s probably true, Al. But anyway…”

It was a typically self-deprecating moment from the former England striker, who has often been candid when the subject of relationships comes up.

Earlier this year, he made it clear he had no intention of stepping back into the dating world.

In an April episode of the same podcast, co-host Micah Richards jokingly suggested that they should “get you a partner,” only for Lineker to quickly shut down the idea.

“I’m so happy on my own,” he insisted.

“I’ve got lots of friends I go out with and have dinner and have fun.

"I’m alright, Micah, honestly. I’ve been married most of my adult life and I’m quite set in my ways and comfortable on my own now.”

Lineker’s family life has been well documented over the years.

He first married model Michelle Cockayne in 1986, with whom he has four sons.

After two decades together, the marriage ended in 2006.

Court filings at the time cited Lineker’s “unreasonable behaviour,” though both later emphasised the split had been amicable.

Three years later, Lineker married Welsh model and actress Danielle Bux in an intimate ceremony in Italy.

Their marriage lasted seven years before they announced an amicable separation in 2016, reportedly due to Lineker not wanting to have more children. Despite the divorce, the pair have remained close friends.

Since then, Lineker has embraced life as a single man, balancing his broadcasting career, charity work, and time with his sons.

He is currently focusing on his podcast business, having left the BBC earlier this year.

Match of the Day has gone on without him, with Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates sharing broadcasting duties throughout the season.
