No action was taken, despite Brighton staff being left furious

Football fans have taken to social media to express a belief that Manchester City star Tijjani Reijnders should have received a red card during Sunday's showdown with Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

With just five minutes on the clock, Reijnders went in for a tackle on Gomez.

He certainly caught the Brighton man but VAR wasn't used to check the incident and he was only given a verbal warning from referee Darren England.

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler was left visibly incensed, with the 32-year-old cutting an angry figure on the touchline.

And fans on social media have now vented their fury that the City midfielder was allowed to stay on the field.

One said: "Reijnders with a horrible follow through on Gomez but VAR is refusing to intervene.

"If this was Casemiro [the Manchester United midfielder] or someone else, it was straight red."

A second fumed: "That challenge of Reijnders on Gomez is one of the clearest red cards ever."

A third hit out by saying: "That is a red card for Tijjani Reijnders. PGMOL is making terrible decisions each game.

"A major decision goes to Man City against Brighton. VAR has even bothered to check it."

Another opined: "That's a red card tackle by Reijnders. Even tho he got the ball. Same thing as just with Curtis Jones on [Yves] Bissouma against Spurs."

And a fifth raged: "Tell me how Reijnders just escaped a RED CARD and VAR kept quiet."

Even former Chelsea, Middlesbrough and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer felt action should have been taken.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, the Australian stated: "Reijnders has played the ball and the follow through has gone quite high on the ankle of Gomez.

"I don't think there is any intent there but it does look very awful."

The drama comes after Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday saw several contentious calls, much to the dismay of Cottagers boss Marco Silva.

The visitors thought they'd taken the lead early on when Josh King beat Robert Sanchez.

However, the goal was disallowed after Fulham star Rodrigo Muniz was adjudged to have fouled Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up.

Then, in the second half, there was more controversy.

Chelsea were given a penalty for a Ryan Sessegnon handball, despite Blues forward Joao Pedro appearing to handle the ball beforehand.
