Mason Greenwood turned down a chance to play for Jamaica with his sights set on England

England manager Thomas Tuchel has firmly ruled out any immediate return to international football for Mason Greenwood.

The German tactician confirmed the Marseille striker is not under consideration for selection.

"He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team," Tuchel stated when questioned about the 23-year-old forward's prospects.

The England boss revealed he has had no contact with the player or his representatives.

Tuchel acknowledged his belief that Greenwood was pursuing international representation with Jamaica, which led England to dismiss any notion of his involvement.

Whilst Tuchel stopped short of permanently closing the door, he emphasised that Greenwood "is no priority at the moment" for the Three Lions.

Jamaica's attempts to secure Greenwood's international services have hit a significant obstacle despite the Caribbean nation obtaining a passport for the former Manchester United academy product.

Head coach Steve McClaren expressed his frustration after discovering the player would not be joining their World Cup qualifying campaign.

"We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp, but in a conversation with his family, he's not going to commit at this time to anybody," the former England manager revealed.

McClaren acknowledged the setback was "a little bit disappointing" but vowed to maintain patience.

The Reggae Boyz boss confirmed they would continue their pursuit, noting Greenwood's expressed affection for Jamaica whilst respecting his current desire to focus solely on club commitments.

Tuchel elaborated on his position regarding the Marseille forward during his press conference. "I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp," the Champions League-winning manager confirmed.

"My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica, so we didn't give it another thought."

When pressed about future possibilities, Tuchel maintained a diplomatic stance whilst making England's current position clear.

"I don't rule anything out, but he is no priority at the moment," he concluded, effectively shutting down speculation about an imminent return to the national setup.

Greenwood's international career comprises a single appearance for England, coming on as a substitute against Iceland in September 2020.

That debut ended in controversy when he and Phil Foden were sent home for violating coronavirus protocols by inviting women to the team hotel.
