One witty observer suggested: "Nahhh, bruh, imagine if Italy won and they all started dishing out fish and chips."

The Lionesses secured their spot in Sunday's final through a remarkable turnaround against Italy, eventually triumphing 2-1 after extra time.

Sarina Wiegman's squad will face either Spain or Germany, with the two nations meeting in the evening's second semi-final.

England appeared destined for elimination when Barbara Bonansea struck in the 33rd minute, giving Italy an advantage they maintained for most of the match.

The Lionesses struggled to break down their opponents' defence as time ebbed away, only for Michelle Agyemang to come to their rescue in the 96th minute.

Her effort arrived with virtually the final kick of normal time, sending the match into an additional period.

The decisive moment came when Chloe Kelly converted from close range after her initial penalty attempt was saved. Kelly's rebound finish sent both players and supporters into raptures, completing a remarkable recovery.

Manager Wiegman reflected on her team's determination: "I thought at 88 mins, wow, OK, well we have to score a goal or we are going home."

She continued: "When the injury time was shown and there were seven minutes left, I thought, that gives us the time we need to create another chance.
