Diogo Jota's death shocked the city of Liverpool and left his young family devastated

Rute Cardoso has shared an emotional tribute on social media to commemorate what would have been her first month of marriage to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota.

The widow posted wedding photographs on Instagram, including an intimate image of the couple's hands intertwined.


Her poignant caption read: "1 month of our 'until death do us part'. Forever. Your white girl."

The message, originally written in Portuguese and Spanish, reflects on the wedding vows they exchanged exactly one month ago.

The 25-year-old's post comes as she continues to grieve the loss of her husband, who died tragically just eleven days after their wedding ceremony.

The fatal accident occurred in the early morning of 3 July near Zamora in northern Spain.

Jota, aged 28, and his 25-year-old brother André Silva perished when their vehicle left the road at approximately 12:30am BST.

Spanish Guardia Civil reported that the car veered from its path before crashing and subsequently catching fire.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene but were unable to rescue the brothers from the burning vehicle.

Authorities confirmed no other vehicles were involved in the incident. The tragedy struck merely eleven days following Jota's marriage ceremony, leaving behind a young widow and three small children.

The couple exchanged vows on 22 June in Porto, celebrating their union alongside their three young children.

Denis, born in 2021, and Duarte, born in 2023, were present at the ceremony, along with their baby daughter whose name remains private.

Cardoso had posted a wedding video on social media hours before news of the accident emerged, captioning it "A day we will never forget".

The footage captured moments of the newlyweds posing together and celebrating with their children.

The Portuguese footballer had been in a long-term relationship with Cardoso before their marriage, building a family together over several years.

Liverpool Football Club expressed devastation at the loss of their player, with the club taking the decision to retire Jota's number 20 jersey across all team levels.

This decision was made following discussions with Cardoso and the footballer's family members.

The Portuguese Football Federation described the deaths as "irreparable losses for Portuguese football".

They highlighted Jota's achievements, noting his nearly 50 international appearances and describing him as "an extraordinary person who was respected by all his teammates and opponents".

During the 2024/25 season, Jota contributed six goals in 26 matches, helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title. The Portuguese national team praised his "contagious joy" and recognised his status as a community role model.
