Cole Palmer scored twice in stoppage time as Chelsea won a thrilling match against United

Chelsea stunned Manchester United to win 4-3 in a Premier League classic at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, with Cole Palmer scoring twice in stoppage time.

Erik ten Hag's side came back from two goals down to lead 3-2 in west London but Palmer scored his second penalty of the match before a deflected strike won it late on.

Both teams came into the match off the back of demoralising draws against Burnley and Brentford respectively last weekend.

It was Chelsea who took the ascendency early and raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Conor Gallagher and Palmer.

Gallagher kept his shot low to beat Andre Onana in the fourth minute before Palmer remained calm to score another penalty after Antony had fouled Marc Cucurella.

United looked out of the game but Chelsea shot themselves in the foot when Moises Caicedo's pass inadvertently fed Alejandro Garnacho through on goal and he kept his composure to run through and score.

Bruno Fernandes equalised with a back-post header and the match was somehow level at half-time. The game was there for either team to win and it was United who took their chance when Garnacho got on the end of Antony's stunning cross.

But Chelsea got a second penalty in stoppage time, which Palmer converted, before he sealed his hat-trick with a deflected strike in the 101st minute.

GB News looks at what we learned from a thrilling encounter between two struggling sides.

Fallen giants share major problem

Chelsea and United dominated English football earlier this century but are both a far cry from that now.

One major issue they share is defensively they are just nowhere near the level they need to be.

Chelsea have spent over £200m on Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez but they don't seem to offer any protection to their back line.

It was like a basketball game at times this evening and neither team knew how to take the sting out of it.

United's midfield has taken huge criticism this season and Casemiro again looked overrun.

Kobbie Mainoo is a great talent but he is not a No 6 just yet and Ten Hag needs more protection in there.

Injuries have played a part in weakening both teams' back fours but there were still plenty of expensive players on show.

The match was great to watch for the neutral but Chelsea and United fans will be pleased it is over.

Palmer mature beyond his years

Palmer has now scored all eight of his penalties in a Chelsea shirt.

His calmness under pressure on the big occasion is what is the most impressive aspect of the youngster's game.

Gareth Southgate will certainly be taking note of his quality from 12 yards.

And he was there to fire in the winner via a deflection to send the home crowd wild.

Where Chelsea would be without him doesn't bare thinking about for Blues fans.

It was clear Garnacho always had talent but consistency was lacking from his game.

This season he has started to put in regular top performances, even when United have struggled as a whole.

At just 19 years of age, it could be argued he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

He and Mainoo are two big reasons why United fans can be excited for the future.
