Two Premier League teams have already been punished for breaching financial rules

Chelsea are potentially in line for a bigger points deduction than Everton and Nottingham Forest, it has been claimed.

The Blues are in serious danger of breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and could be handed a heavy punishment next season.

Everton were the first team to be deducted points for breaching PSR earlier this season, with their 10-point punishment since reduced to six.

Forest were this week handed a four-point penalty for a similar offence, dropping Nuno Espirito Santo's side into the relegation zone.

Chelsea have spent huge amounts in the transfer market since Todd Boehly bought the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

The American has committed to spending more than £1billion on new signings, a gung-ho approach that could soon catch up with the west London club.

Football finance expert Stefan Borson says the Blues face a huge battle in an attempt to avoid any punishment.

He claims the £55million sale of Mason Mount to Manchester United last summer actually occurred during last season's finances.

Borson said on talkSPORT: "There was an assumption with Mason Mount, because he was announced on Manchester United's website on July 1 that [his sale] had been put into this current season.

"So the £55m of profit was in this season. It now transpires that Mason Mount appears to have been transacted in 2022/23 and that is how they got through [FFP rules]."

Being an academy graduate, the money brought in by Mount was pure profit to Chelsea.

Simon Jordan interjected: "Which means they've now got a £55m bigger hole this season."

To which Borson replied: "Correct. Because we also know from the BlueCo accounts that they are currently, from the post-balance sheet events, that they are something like £48m in profit for this year.

"But of course, this year from an operating perspective, is going to be even worse than last year because they've got no Champions League and no Europe at all."

Borson says Chelsea must bring in big money for more academy graduates before June 30 this year in order to avoid a penalty.

However, he claims doing that is now considered almost 'impossible' by the Premier League.

He added: "Really, they have to find buyers for Trevoh Chalobah for £20m, Armando Broja for £40m, and Conor Gallagher for £50m.

"It's those sort of deals that need to be done. And by the way, they all need to be done by June 30. That, as we know, is articulated within the Forest decision.

"There's a whole conversation about how hard it is to sell players in the period before June.

"The Premier League actually suggested that more or less that it was impossible."

Borson says that will ultimately mean that Chelsea are in line for a bigger punishment than both Everton and Forest.

He said: "Yeah. Well, possibly more severe.

"I think the scale of the losses they're currently forecasting, to me, appear to be vastly in excess of both Everton and Nottingham Forest."
