The England international has struggled at Stamford Bridge since his move from Manchester City in 2022

Alan Shearer has admitted he was 'getting angry' when Raheem Sterling took a penalty away from Cole Palmer during Chelsea's 4-2 victory over Leicester on Sunday.

Palmer, along with Marc Cucurella, Carney Shukwuemeka and Noni Madueke, was on target as the Blues booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

They will now do battle with Manchester City next month hoping to make the final of the historic competition.

But while Chelsea won, Sterling was criticised after another disappointing day at the office for the forward.

The former Manchester City and Liverpool star took the ball away from Palmer, despite his compatriot being the Blues' No 1 penalty taker.

Sterling's poor effort down the middle was then saved by Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.

The 29-year-old looked devastated and has now missed more penalties than he's scored throughout his career so far.

And Shearer, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, has now blasted Sterling and admitted he was 'getting angry' while he watched the situation unfold.

"What on Earth is going on there? Seriously, I was getting angry and I didn't really care," he said.

"I was thinking: 'Why on earth is he taking the ball off Palmer?' Palmer's scored five out of five.

"He [Palmer] has been the best player for Chelsea, he looks confident when he's taking them.

"Why would you even contemplate taking it off him? Why would you put yourself forward when you have a record like that?"

Micah Richards then interjected to defend Sterling.

He suggested Palmer had actually offered the winger the chance to take the penalty, which was awarded after he was fouled in the box by Abdul Fatawu.

Richards said: "It's confidence. Cole Palmer's flying, but sometimes a striker in form would give it to a player who is suffering a little bit in confidence.

"Just to get his confidence back. No disrespect, it was Leicester at home."

Yet Shearer was dismissive of that theory and continued his rant by saying: "What do you mean it's confidence? Bulls**t. It's the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, man.

"Forget about who you're playing or who you want to be nice to and all that s**t. Give the penalty to the penalty taker.

"Forget about all that being nice s**t, 'I want to get my confidence up' and all that. He's not on the pens.

"Cole Palmer's on the pens and he's been successful at them, five out of five. Get off, I'm taking it, simple."

Sterling was booed after he was subbed during Chelsea's win.

The winger has struggled for form ever since joining the west London giants from Manchester City 18 months ago.

Yet Mauricio Pochettino insists the club will do everything they can to ensure Sterling returns to his brilliant best.

"The feelings weren’t good for him but we are going to support him. He has an unbelievable CV," said the Argentine.
