Grimsby continued their remarkable cup run after beating Manchester United by defeating Championship side Sheffield Wednesday

Grimsby Town's remarkable cup journey continued with an impressive victory at Hillsborough, where the League Two outfit defeated Sheffield Wednesday to secure their place in the fourth round, while both Crystal Palace and Brentford were victorious on penalties.

The Mariners, who eliminated Manchester United in the previous round, capitalised on a sparse home crowd as numerous Wednesday supporters stayed away in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Approximately 6,000 travelling fans from Lincolnshire, almost doubling that of the home support and creating a strange atmosphere at the Hillsborough.

Jaze Kabia, who competed in the sixth tier with Truro City last season, scored the decisive goal early in the second half, nodding home Reece Staunton's corner kick.

At Selhurst Park, Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez emerged as the hero in a dramatic south London derby, stopping two penalties to secure a 4-2 shootout victory over Millwall.

The Championship visitors had forced the shootout through Ryan Leonard's dramatic injury-time header that had cancelled out Chris Richards' 72nd-minute strike.

The French goalkeeper denied both Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu from the spot, whilst Palace converted all four attempts.

Jean-Philippe Mateta could have avoided the shootout altogether but squandered a golden chance just moments to go, sending his effort wide from close range.

The victory maintained Palace's impressive form, extending their unbeaten streak to 16 matches across all competitions that, astonishingly, dates back to mid-April. During this time, they have won both the FA Cup and Community Shield, while remaining unbeaten in the new season.

Brentford secured their fourth-round qualification through a 4-2 penalty shootout victory against Aston Villa, after the match finished level at 1-1.

The Bees' goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, who had earlier allowed Harvey Elliott's shot to slip through his grasp for Villa's opener, redeemed himself with crucial saves from John McGinn and Matty Cash during the shootout.

Aaron Hickey produced a spectacular equaliser for the home side during normal time, volleying into the top corner after Pau Torres headed away Frank Onyeka's long throw.

The goal originated from a long throw, mirroring that of Brentford's late leveller against Chelsea at the weekend.

Mikkel Damsgaard converted the winning penalty to send Brentford through.

Villa's goal drought finally ended after over 500 minutes without finding the net in competitive fixtures, their last strike coming against Tottenham in May through Boubacar Kamara.

Despite breaking their barren spell, they couldn't progress past Keith Andrews' Brentford side. Concerns continue to grow at Villa Park at this early stage of the season.

The fourth-round draw takes place next Wednesday, after the conclusion of the second round fixtures.
