The highlights show will be without Gary Lineker for the first time in over 25 years

The BBC has made another significant change as it gears up for the return of Match of the Day this weekend.

The Premier League highlights show will have a new face as Mark Chapman will take over from the sacked Gary Lineker, with Gaby Logan and Kelly Cates joining for various parts of the coverage throughout the course of the campaign.

But it’s now been revealed that fans who wait to watch the new-look show will have the option to watch highlights early.

As the BBC has announced, Premier League highlights will be available more than two hours before Match of the Day airs on television.

Fans will be able to watch just game highlights on BBC iPlayer from 8pm.

Despite the big change, BBC officials still believe that MOTD will still bring in lots of viewers with its new line-up.

A BBC press release confirmed: "Published live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, match highlights from every fixture will drop at 8pm, putting all the biggest moments at fans’ fingertips ahead of the expert analysis and in-depth discussion on the main show.

"It’s a game-changing way to stay connected and fully immersed in the action.”

Match of the Day brings in around 3.5million average viewers, according to the Telegraph, and despite the rise in streaming and access to live games, the viewership for the show has remained strong.

Lineker may have been removed from the show, but previous regulars like Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will still be making appearances.

A new pundit to join the team will be Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney, as it was revealed last month that he would be making appearances on a regular basis.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

The shake-up to MOTD comes following the departure Gary Lineker as host.

The 64-year-old sparked outrage after he shared a controversial post that appeared to represent supporters of Israel as rats, which he later apologised for.

Just days after posting the story, he announced he would be leaving the BBC. It was initially believed he had quit the show; however, he went on to later reveal he was removed by BBC bosses.

The Premier League will return Friday night with Liverpool facing Bournemouth. Arne Slot's side will be hoping to win the title for the second year on the trot, having cruised to glory last term.
