Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has decided to continue with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, bringing clarity to months of uncertainty surrounding his immediate plans.
The 27-year-old Dutch driver had attracted significant interest from Mercedes, with team principal Toto Wolff acknowledging recent discussions about a potential transfer.
Speculation had intensified following Red Bull's recent performance struggles and expectations that Mercedes could deliver a competitive car under the sport's new technical regulations beginning next year.
The decision, which emerged ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, means the reigning champion could honour his full existing contract that runs through 2028.

Speaking before the final race ahead of Formula 1's summer break, Verstappen addressed the ongoing speculation directly.
"The thing is always that people are waffling so much throughout the whole season, while the only one that actually can or should speak is not speaking. That's me," he stated.
The Dutch driver revealed he had deliberately remained silent whilst others fuelled rumours, adding: "Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama.

"I'm discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change for next year."
Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko provided additional confirmation of the arrangement, telling Sport.de: "Yes, I can confirm that Max Verstappen will drive for Red Bull in 2026."
According to reports, Verstappen has been encouraged by early collaboration with new team principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed leadership following Christian Horner's departure after two decades.

With his primary target now unavailable, Mercedes can finalise negotiations with George Russell for a substantial contract renewal.
The British driver is reportedly close to agreeing a multi-year deal that would see his salary rise to £30 million per year, positioning him among Formula 1's highest earners behind only Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
The agreement is expected to secure Russell's services through at least the conclusion of the 2027 campaign.

This development solidifies the 26-year-old's status as Mercedes' long-term focal point, having demonstrated his capabilities by matching Hamilton's pace throughout their three-year partnership.
Russell's elevated position contrasts sharply with teammate Kimi Antonelli's precarious situation, however.
The 18-year-old Italian has endured six pointless finishes in seven races, with his contract expiring this year and no renewal discussions currently reported.
