This weekend will see half a million fans descend on the Silverstone Circuit

Silverstone is preparing to host the British Grand Prix this weekend, with a record-breaking 500,000 people expected at the event.

The anticipated attendance would outshine last year’s 480,000 fans who witnessed Lewis Hamilton’s final home win with Mercedes.

Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali has called the event “incredible” and believes that Silverstone should remain on the F1 calendar “forever”.

However, the former Ferrari boss has dismissed the idea of a second race in the UK in the near future.

When asked, he emphatically responded: “No, I don't think so. Actually, 'I don't think' means, 'No'."

He spoke to a select group of media in F1’s London offices ahead of the race, saying: “It will be huge, 500,000, it should be around that number.

"All the information that we have is pointing towards this new record, which we are very pleased about. It will be an incredible opportunity to share the passion which is, once again, incredible.

"The way the British fans love Formula 1, it's absolutely unique.

"When you see events like the Silverstone Grand Prix, when you see events like Goodwood, when you see these kinds of things, this kind of passion can only be experienced here.

"I always tell people who love our sport, they should come here to understand what is the passion for racing and, of course, for Formula 1."

Last year, Formula 1 extended its contract with Silverstone, ensuring the race will remain on the calendar until 2034.

When asked why he extended the contract, the Italian said: “I cannot think of not having a race in the UK and I don't see any other places where we can have such an incredible event, apart from Silverstone.

"I don't see Silverstone not being able to do, if they want, what others have already done. I believe that Silverstone has the right characteristics to stay forever on the calendar.

"They did not request that to us so far. We have extended – nine years is a long time – but my point is if they want to put that on the table then I'm ready to do it.”

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Lando Norris will be looking to take victory at his home race for the first time and is arguably the favourite, having won the last race in Austria, as well as driving the seemingly uncatchable McLaren.

Hamilton will also be looking to continue his 11-year streak of finishing on the podium at Silverstone. The seven-time champion has yet to finish on the podium for Ferrari in a Grand Prix this season.

Travel issues have plagued the event over recent years, with congestion making access difficult for fans.

The F1 boss is set to meet with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to discuss the transport issues on Wednesday, in hopes of improving transport routes to the circuit.
