Harry Kane has been incredible for us. It was a very high-level game. We had more shots on goal but it's a game of fine margins. It does feel like a missed opportunity. This group could have won this World Cup."
9.23pm - Jill Scott: "We were magnificent in the second half. We had Mbappe under control. It's so disappointing."
9.16pm - Gary Neville says England will consider this a "huge missed opportunity". "You're outplaying the world champions and Morocco are waiting in the semi-final. Instead, suddenly you're going back to the hotel and packing your bags to leave for the airport at 9am. It's heartbreaking."
9.07pm - Bookmakers install France as evens favourites to win a second successive World Cup. If they do, they'll be the first nation in history to successfully defend the title. Argentina are now 7/4 second favourites.

9.02pm - Crushing disappointment for England. They were much the better team in the second half, missed a penalty, hit the post and could - and probably should - have won that game. France will now face Morocco in the World Cup semi-final and are huge favourites to lift the trophy again.
9pm - FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 1 FRANCE 2
9pm - England are OUT of the World Cup.
8.58pm - Last chance. England have a free-lick right on the edge of the French box. Marcus Rashford lines up the ball. MISSED!!! Six inches too high. Great effort. But that's it.
8.56pm - John Stones goes down injured. He looks badly hurt, but this is taking up the last precious moments of the quarter-final. Jack Grealish comes on for England. But time is almost out. It looks like heartbreak yet again for Gareth Southgate's men.
8.54pm - Luke Shaw fires in a cross from England's left but Hugo Lloris claims it on the six-yard line.
8.51pm - Corner to England. Easily cleared. This added time is quickly ticking by.
8.50pm - EIGHT minutes of added time. Not sure where that's come from. But we'll take it.
8.47pm - Mason Mount tries a worldie from 35 yards. And it ends up close to where Harry Kane's penalty landed. Gives the French plenty of time to waste. Poor decision.
8.46pm - It looks like Harry Kane will be England's latest World Cup villain. Just two minutes to go. Very flat now. That was the big chance.
8.44pm - That's nerves. England's most reliable player blasts the ball high and wide over the bar. Terrible miss from someone of Kane's quality. Only five minutes left. It looks like England are heading home.
8.43pm - MISSED PENALTY.
8.40pm - PENALTY ENGLAND!!! Another penalty for Harry Kane after Mason Mount is barged over in the box. Incredible stuff. Do NOT miss this Harry!
8.38pm - Only 10 minutes to go. Jordan Henderson is replaced by Mason Mount. And Raheem Sterling is on for Bukayo Saka. England need a miracle here. The French are looking very strong again.
8.37pm - ENGLAND 1 FRANCE 2
8.37pm - GOAL!!! Olivier Giroud heads home for the French.
8.36pm - HUGE SAVE!!! Jordan Pickford keeps out a volley from Olivier Giroud.
8.35pm - Attendance is 68,895. Full capacity, apparently. Despite there seemingly being lots of empty seats in the Al Bayt Stadium.
8.34pm - Mason Mount is warming up. Gareth Southgate seems to be considering a change.
8.30pm - The French are rattled here. Bukayo Sako fires wide after a quick break down England's left. England on top. But can they make it count?
8.29pm - CLOSE!!! Harry Maquire gets his head on a free kick and it hits the outside of the post and deflects wide. Big let-off for France. Will England regret missing that chance?
8.28pm - Cagey. Neither side wants to make a fatal error here. Not with 33-1 outsiders Morocco all that's standing between the winner of this and a World Cup final.
8.22pm - Griezmann has to be careful here. He's on a yellow card and brings down Phil Foden in the centre circle after the Man City winger beats three French players in a lung-bursting run. He gets away with just a telling-off from Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio.
8.20pm - Bukayo Saka beats several players and gets a shot away on the French goal but it has no pace and is easily saved by Lloris. Better from England.
8.16pm - The game is really opening up now. Mbappe beats Kyle Walker (Kyle Walker!) for pace down the left and squares it across the box, but England force it clear through Jordan Henderson. It comes moments after Adrien Rabiot forced a smart save from Jordan Pickford. The French are responding very well to England's goal. Different level now.
8.13pm - ENGLAND 1 FRANCE 1
8.13pm - GOAL!!! Harry Kane equalises for England from the spot. Game on.
8.11pm - PENALTY ENGLAND! Buyako Saka is fouled in the box after an excellent counter-attack.
8.09pm - "The referee has been poor." Lee Dixon isn't sitting on the fence.
8.07pm - SO CLOSE! Jude Bellingham fires in a brilliant effort from outside the box in the first action of the second half. Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris makes a fingertip save to keep France ahead. Harry Maguire wins the first header from the corner, but France clear.
7.50pm - Half-time. Advantage France. England haven't had the rub of the referring decisions in the first 45 minutes, but they haven't played that well either, in what has been a predictably tight game. Big team-talk needed from Gareth Southgate, or England are heading home at the quarter-final stage yet again.
7.48pm - Corner for England deep into added time at the end of the first half. Wasted by Phil Foden.
7.43pm - Antoine Griezmann is booked for his third niggly foul of the game, this time bringing down Kyle Walker in midefield.
7.39pm - Mbappe blasts the ball over the bar after a well-worked free kick from the French. Surprisingly wasteful from the world's best player.

7.33pm - Jude Bellingham gives the ball away to Kylian Mbappé deep in the England half. Not a smart idea. Kyle Walker to the rescue.

7.26pm - England are denied a penalty after Harry Kane was seemingly fouled on the edge of the French box by Dayot Upamecano. Big talking point - hugely controversial decision by VAR.
7.20pm - Luke Shaw curls a free kick around the French wall but Hugo Lloris makes a comfortable save, denying England an instant equaliser.
7.16pm - GOAL: England 0 France 1. Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni's blasts in the opener from 20 yards despite an apparent foul on Bukayo Saka.

7.11pm - Olivier Giroud gets the game's first effort on target but his weak header is easily saved by Jordan Pickford.
7.10pm - It's been a cagey start to England's second World Cup quarter-final in four years. Both sides have whipped early balls into the box but no clear cut chances so far. French playmaker Antoine Griezmann is the best player on the pitch so far.
7pm - Kick-off at the Al bat Stadium in Qatar.
6pm - England have named an unchanged side for their World Cup quarter-final clash with holders France.
Gareth Southgate stuck with the same starting XI that won 3-0 over Senegal in the last-16 as England returned to Al Bayt Stadium aiming to reach consecutive World Cup semi-finals.
Raheem Sterling was named on the bench having missed the Senegal victory after returning to the UK to deal with an incident at his home. Southgate intimated in the build-up to the game that he would retain a back four rather than adopt a more defensive approach and he stuck to his word.
France also made no alterations from the team which beat Poland 3-1 to reach the last eight, with five-goal Kylian Mbappe among their line-up.
5.45pm - Shouts of “allez les Bleus” from French fans, alongside England chants, could be heard as the atmosphere begins to build at the Al Bayt Stadium.
England supporters Ben Doveton and George Doveton, 12, from Bedfordshire, are both excited and nervous ahead of the game.
George said: “I’m a bit nervous because they’re France, the won the last World Cup, they’re not a pushover and it’s going to be a very tough game.”
He added: "Jude Bellingham can make the difference, adding on England’s chances if they win: “Morocco are a tough team – they beat Spain, Belgium and Portugal, you think they’re an easy side on paper but they’ve got very good unity so I think it’ll be a tough game whoever plays them.”
Mr Doverton, 56, added: “That just shows how important this game is. If we can beat France then we have a shot at Morocco in the semi-final.”
4.40pm - Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has said that Gareth Southgate’s team does not need to fear France.
He said: “I don’t think we should fear France at all. I think the way we performed against Senegal bar the first 20 minutes were very good.
“We win the ball back very well against opponents. We nullify opponents to minimal chances.”
“I think they’ve got to respect France because of the players they’ve got, the experience they’ve got, the fact that they’ve won the World Cup before.
“There’s players in that team that have done that. But I wouldn’t say there’s anything to fear.”
3pm - England and France fans believe the winner of their quarter-final clash could go on to secure World Cup glory.
The Three Lions landed the first blow on Saturday as their supporters beat their French counterparts 7-4 in a match at a windswept Doha Sports Park.
Thousands of fans will later cheer on England in Al Khor and millions more back home will watch on TV, with pubs and bars readying themselves for another bumper evening.
The two giants of European football will meet at the Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday evening, with the winner facing Morocco or Portugal in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The British Beer and Pub Association hopes the 7pm kick-off time in the UK will encourage punters to visit their local early.
It predicts six million more pints could be sold during the quarter-final, providing a £26 million boost to the industry.
In Doha, the seven-a-side supporters’ game was feisty at times and offered a glimpse of the passion and desire expected when the real thing starts. France took the lead three times in the 60-minute clash but were pegged back to 3-3 on the stroke of half-time and were overrun in the second half.
England supporters’ team boss Garford Beck said: “It’s a great way of bringing fans together and the game had a little bit of an edge to it.”
David Mundo, of the French team, said it was a “tough game” and predicted a France win later. Mr Beck replied: “I wish you a safe journey to Paris on Monday.”
Mr Mundo said Kylian Mbappe is “most likely” to make the difference for France, telling the PA news agency: “Most likely we’ll have to concede a goal or two from you as you’ve been scoring many goals and we’ve been conceding, so my concern is how many goals you’ll score. “But I give you one if you want, you be happy, and then we come back and we win.”

Chef Mark Trigg, 48, from Derby, said he had the “typical match day nerves” but fancied England to win.
He said: “I think we can get a 2-1 tonight. It’ll be a bit tighter, we have scored a good few goals on the way through, I don’t see so many goals tonight.”
Mr Trigg added he will be wearing his lucky England suit which his mother helped make, explaining: “It’s a red hat, matching shirt, matching shorts, and it’s been getting noticed all over Qatar.”
Asked if he believes the winner of the tie will win the competition, Mr Trigg said: “Yeah, I’ve been saying that – I think there’s two good sides out there. Brazil are out which opens it a little more.”
James Swann, 28, from Barnsley, said France are a “good side” and have a front four “as good as anybody in world football”. But Mr Swann, who works in property and construction, told PA: “I don’t think they’re that much better than us, they must be scared of our front three as well.”
Brothers Josh and Matty Smith said they have enjoyed the “buzz” during their trip to Qatar and hoped England boss Gareth Southgate opts for a positive approach.
Welder Matty, 24, who lives in Peterborough, told PA: “Hopefully we can get a good win – only trouble is they’ve got Mbappe, I think Kyle Walker will do a good job on him, but they’ve also got (Antoine) Griezmann.
“If we worry too much about Mbappe, you miss half the other team and they’ve got some good players.”
