McColgan broke the Scottish record by finishing the race in two hours and 24 seconds

Scottish athlete Eilish McColgan has spoken out on her engagement to long-term partner Michael Rimmer after setting a new Scottish record at this year's London Marathon.

The Dundee-born runner set a new Scottish record in Sunday's marathon before jetting off to Japan, where Rimmer - himself an Olympic athlete - popped the question.

The proposal took place in front of Mount Fuji in Japan, just days after her impressive London Marathon debut.

Speaking to GB News, McColgan admitted is has been a "busy week" for her, and her legs are "definitely a bit delicate" after her impressive marathon performance.

McColgan said: "The legs are definitely a little bit delicate and a reminder of that weekend. But it was a really, really incredible race and an amazing experience."

As sports broadcaster Paul Coyte highlighted that McColgan broke her own mother's record with her marathon feat on Sunday, McColgan revealed that it was the "last record she had left", before she broke it.

McColgan told GB News: "It was the only record that my mum had left. I started breaking her track records back in 2017, so it was a really special moment to keep the Scottish records in my family name.

"My mum for a very long time has always felt like I was capable of breaking them, and the marathon was the last one to get, so yeah, a really special day for my family."

Discussing her engagement, GB News hosts Ellie Costello and Eamonn Holmes were overjoyed as McColgan revealed her partner popped the question "just a few hours ago", before they announced it on social media.

McColgan gushed: "I actually got engaged just a couple of hours ago. So it was very, very fresh, it is breaking news.

"I think you've probably announced it to everyone before my family! But it was literally just a couple of couple of hours ago, so yeah, we're very much excited and on cloud nine at the moment, it was such a beautiful day."

Sharing more details of the proposal, McColgan revealed that her partner, Michael Rimmer "winged" the location - in front of Mount Fuji - after only making plans to visit the night before.

McColgan said: "We could not have asked for anything better, it's now really special memories. And he absolutely winged it by the way, because that was not even planned.

"We hadn't even planned to go to visit Mount Fuji until late last night, so yeah, he's definitely pulled it off."

When asked by Coyte if Rimmer had planned to possibly propose at the London Marathon, McColgan claimed that he had "not planned" when he was going to ask, but was waiting for a "good moment".

She concluded: "He's had the ring for a little while, but was just waiting for a good moment. I know he would definitely not do that at the London Marathon.

"He would know that I would want a hole in the ground to swallow me up, so this was nice, there was no one there, it was just us, and it was a really special moment between the two of us."
