The horror injury happened on the opening day of the fourth test at Old Trafford on Wednesday

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant suffered a painful foot injury that ended his innings on the opening day of the fourth test at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old was attempting a reverse-sweep against England seamer Chris Woakes when he struck the ball directly onto his own foot.

The impact left Pant unable to continue batting, forcing him to retire hurt after scoring 37 runs from 48 deliveries.

Medical staff attended to the wicketkeeper on the field as he struggled to walk following the blow.

The incident represents a significant setback for India, who were building their innings at 211 for three when their key batsman had to leave the field. Pant has been a crucial performer for the tourists throughout the series.

The severity of the injury became apparent when Pant removed his shoe, exposing significant swelling on his foot.

Medical personnel examined him while he remained on the pitch, determining he could not continue.

Unable to walk without assistance, the Indian star required transport from the field in an electric golf buggy that served as an ambulance.

The Manchester crowd offered warm applause as he was driven away, though Pant appeared visibly disappointed at having to abandon his innings.

Supporters expressed concern on social media, with one writing: "Hoping it's not a serious injury for Rishabh Pant."

Another commented: "Rishabh Pant can't even walk. That looked horrible. Get well soon man." A third supporter posted: "That's nasty injury wishing him a quick recovery."

Despite the unfortunate end to his innings, Pant had achieved a remarkable milestone earlier in his knock.

He became the first wicketkeeper to accumulate more than 1,000 Test runs in away matches in England, cementing his place in cricket history.

The injury comes at a critical juncture in the series, with England holding a 2-1 advantage following victories at Headingley and Lord's.

India claimed the second test at Edgbaston but now face the challenge of competing without one of their most dangerous batsmen.

Pant's aggressive batting style has proven particularly effective against England's bowlers throughout the tour. His absence could significantly impact India's strategy as they attempt to level the series in Manchester.
