Floyd Mayweather has insisted his new star is 'the next Floyd Mayweather'

After being branded 'the next Floyd Mayweather' by the man himself, it is clear to see that big things are expected of Curmel Moton.

American sensation Gervonta Davis has long been tipped as the man to take Mayweather's mantle in the boxing world and boasts a similar unbeaten record with 30-0.

But Mayweather, who had taken Tank under his wing, now has a new protege, who was watching videos of the 50-0 fighter since he was in kindergarten.

Money has long been the inspiration for young boxing wannabes due to his unparalleled success and larger-than-life personality.

After retiring with an undefeated record, his trophy cabinet included 15 major world championships ranging from super featherweight to light middleweight.

Now the new kid on the block Moton might still only be 18 but he already has four wins under his belt and has been tipped for stardom.

Leonard Ellerbe, of Mayweather Promotions, revealed how he and Mayweather want Moton, who is a featherweight, to become a world champion still as a teenager.

“You don’t need 18-19 fights [to fight for a title], like when Floyd was coming up,” Ellerbe said. “All these guys he’s sparred say [Moton’s] the real deal.”

Mayweather has been sponsoring Moton in tournaments, even paying for his flights to attend the events and when asked what the youngster needs to stand out, he gave some priceless advice.

“Hunger. Hunger – he wanted to be great," the 47-year-old said. "He’s boxed so many different champions throughout the years, even as an amateur. I just want the best for him, but, so much talent."

On another occasion, Mayweather said: "If given the opportunity, he could be the next Floyd Mayweather.”

The two first came into contact nine years ago when Moton visited Vegas’ Mayweather Boxing Club and the teenager said: “I was just studying him and watching how he did his camp.

“Not long after that, I started training at the gym and started sparring some of the kids they had in there.

“I whupped on them. Word got back to Floyd. I become cool with everyone around the gym, and then I started going to tournaments and bringing [belts] back to the gym.”

Mayweather and Davis were once close, to the point where the boxing legend was promoting Tank, but that relationship came to an end in 2022 and has been frosty ever since.

Even to the point where Davis announced to prospective boxers to never sign for Mayweather Promotions, writing earlier this year on social media: "If you sign with this fraud, he will f*** your career up. He is not a good businessman at all."

That might not be good news for Moton, though if he can manage to follow in his footsteps and land half of the accolades Money took home, it might be all worth it.

The 18-year-old is set to take the next step in his career at the weekend with his fifth professional fight pencilled in.

He will face Victor Vazquez on Saturday night, appearing on Mayweather's undercard as he prepares to take on John Gotti III in an exhibition rematch.
