The Duchess of Edinburgh has been described as a vital “bridge” between the generations of senior royals, linking Princess Kate with the older members of the family, including Queen Camilla and Princess Anne.
Royal author Sean Smith told GB News exclusively that Sophie’s age and position in the monarchy make her one of the most important figures as the family adapts to change.
He explained: “The question of age is Sophie’s biggest asset for the Royal Family moving forward.
"At 60, she is placed almost exactly in the middle of Kate and both Anne and Camilla – she bridges the gap between the generations.”

Mr Smith pointed out that Sophie’s ability to connect with both younger and older members of the monarchy has strengthened her role in recent years.
As the wife of Prince Edward, she has become one of the most visible working royals, representing the King at engagements across the UK and abroad.
He highlighted how Sophie herself has championed the importance of celebrating women as they age.
Mr Smith said: “I love this quote from her: ‘We are fabulous in our forties, and we are even more fabulous in our fifties, sixties and seventies, and we need to celebrate that and keep opportunities going for women.'”
The Duchess has won praise for her steady approach and commitment to causes including sexual violence awareness, supporting survivors of conflict, and championing opportunities for young people.
Her reputation as a dependable member of the Firm has grown steadily over two decades of service.
Mr Smith described how Sophie’s maturity and experience allow her to play a unique role at the centre of the family, acting as a confidante for Kate while also standing shoulder to shoulder with the Queen and Princess Royal.
Her place within the Windsor circle is reinforced by geography, too, with Sophie based at Bagshot Park in Surrey and Kate soon to be settled with her family at Forest Lodge in Windsor, a short distance away.
