The author has said the royals’ coming within such close proximity of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will cause friction and lead to comparisons being drawn between the two couples.

Historian and biographer Amanda Lucy Foreman said there would be “direct, peer-to-peer comparison” as the “royal smackdown of sorts” takes place.

She went on to describe the Prince and Princess of Wales as "working Windsors", and Meghan and Harry as "working-it Windsors".

She later went on to say that the "working-it Windsors" are "wearing out their welcome" in the US.

During their visit William and Kate will attend a special event with the Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, and the prince will visit the John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum with Caroline Kennedy, the former president’s daughter.

The prince and princess will learn about the work that local organisations are doing to mitigate the risk of rising sea levels to Boston, and when they tour the Greentown Labs, in the nearby town of Somerville, will get an insight into the development of innovative green technologies.

They will also present their Earthshot Prize on Wednesday.

The £1million prize will go to five lucky winners who present their climate change solutions.
