The magnificent ceremony saw a parade of naval personnel in gleaming white uniforms

Princess Leonor of Spain shared an emotional embrace with her younger sister Infanta Sofia as she completed her naval training in Marín on Wednesday.

King Felipe awarded his eldest daughter the Grand Cross of Naval Merit, one of Spain's highest military honours, as Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofia applauded.

The 19-year-old heir to the Spanish throne, resplendent in her crisp white naval uniform, beamed as she hugged her 18-year-old sister during the magnificent ceremony.

King Felipe, similarly dressed in military uniform, also embraced Princess Leonor after presenting her with the distinction.

The princess then stepped forward onto the royal dais to be reunited with her family in a touching moment.

Queen Letizia, wearing a navy ruffled dress, appeared emotional as she enveloped her daughter in a hug.

The ceremony at the Spanish Naval Academy marked the presentation of Royal Dispatches, signifying officers' entry into active service.

Complimenting her naval attire, Princess Leonor wore her hair in a sleek braided bun beneath her sailor cap.

The Grand Cross of Naval Merit represents a significant milestone in her military career as she prepares to become Spain's future head of state and commander of the armed forces.

The princess was promoted to second-class midshipman, equivalent to a fourth-class second lieutenant in other branches of Spain's military.

Princess Leonor recently completed a five-month voyage aboard the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, visiting Latin American countries and New York.

She then spent a month on the frigate Blas de Lezo before Wednesday's ceremony.

The magnificent event marked the completion of Leonor's naval training

The princess embarked on her naval journey in January, setting sail from Cádiz. On Monday, she received the Gold Medal of Galicia in Santiago de Compostela.

Her naval training forms part of her three-year military education across Spain's armed forces. She previously spent a year at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza before beginning her maritime service.

Princess Leonor will begin her third and final year of military training at San Javier Air Force Academy in Murcia in the coming weeks.

She follows in the footsteps of her father King Felipe and grandfather Juan Carlos, who completed training with all three armed services.

Infanta Sofia made her first public appearance since graduating from UWC Atlantic College in Wales on Tuesday.

The teenager joined her parents at Zarzuela Palace to receive the Board of Trustees of the Spanish Committee of the United World Colleges Foundation.

Princess Leonor had been unable to attend her sister's graduation in May but sent a congratulatory video message from overseas.

The Crown Princess and her younger sister previously reunited in secret at the Casona de Jovellanos restaurant earlier this month.
